Protected Class Complaints/Grievances

Federal and state laws and/or university policies protect individuals from harassment or discrimination based on the University’s twelve protected classes, including: race/ethnicity, color, creed, national origin, religion, gender, genetic information, age, sexual orientation, disability, political affiliation or veterans’ status. (See chart below. Click each class for a definition.) (Please view the tabs to the left for grievance procedures at ECU.) University policy also prohibits retaliation for filing or participating in a protected class complaint process.

East Carolina University has systems in place to receive and investigate harassment or discrimination complaints, or allegations of retaliation for filing or participating in these complaint processes. If you feel that you have been harassed or discriminated against by a University employee or visitor based on one of the University’s protected classes outlined above, or allege retaliation related to these complaints, you may fill out an online grievance reporting form accessible at:  http://www.ecu.edu/cs-acad/edc/SubmitAGrievance.cfm, or you may contact the Office for Equity and Diversity at oed@ecu.edu or (252) 328-6804.

If you feel that you have been harassed or discriminated against by a University student based on one of the University’s protected classes outlined above, or allege retaliation related to these complaints, you may complete the general student complaint form accessible at: http://www.ecu.edu/cs-studentlife/dos/studentcomplaintform.cfm, or contact the Office of the Dean of Students at (252) 328-9297 to discuss your concerns.

The appropriate office will review the Complaint and will follow-up with the Complainant following their review.
