Welcome from the Graduate School
Dear New Faculty:
On behalf of the Graduate School at East Carolina University, I welcome you to our campus and wish you the best for an exciting and invigorating year. The Graduate School is the centralized organization responsible for ensuring the graduate student experience – from admission to graduation – is a collaborative, positive experience. The Graduate School is responsible for oversight and administration of all graduate academic policies and curriculum. We support the Graduate Program Directors & Coordinators from each program through trainings and communication to ensure effective advising for students, both campus and distance education. We want our graduate students to have a strong Pirate pride, and we work extensively to ensure they are connected to ECU.
We do this through numerous support endeavors including a monthly newsletter, direct communication to the student body, and an open-door policy that welcomes all students at any time. In this spirit, we also are here to help faculty with their graduate level advising and program management. Our office provides updates monthly to Graduate Program Directors & Coordinators along with meetings to allow for dialogue between the faculty working in the programs and the Graduate School. We take pride in our collaborative style to facilitate the development of new and existing programs. We strive to ensure the Graduate Council is able to establish and implement effective academic policy.
Similar to the ECU Mission statement, we strive to recruit, retain, and graduate high-quality students to meet our goal of maximizing student success. The Graduate School administers graduate assistantships in a fair, equitable and transparent process and ensures all Graduate Program Directors & Coordinators are a part of the process.
With strong attention to supporting scholarship and creative activity, our office is responsible for receiving, reviewing, and approving each master's thesis and doctoral dissertation to ensure inclusion in ECU's portal, ScholarShip. Through an online submission portal, Vireo, we assist the student with uploading the document, revising it to ECU specifications and finally notifying the Office of the Registrar that the document is completed. It is an exciting part of our contribution to ECU – the research that our students produce is simply awe-inspiring, and it is our great privilege to be a part of this work for so many students.
The Graduate School staff await your call, email, or visit so that we may be able to provide you with best practices, support, and general information about our offerings. Our website can be your first step in getting to know the Graduate School. We are so glad you are a Pirate and wish you the best success in your first semesters on campus!
