MINUTES
ACADEMIC AWARDS COMMITTEE
February 3, 2005
Members present: Linda Wolfe, Sharon deBeck, Paul Gemperline, Carey Martin, Dorothy Clayton, Ruth Moskop, Tope Bello, Myra Brown, Lida Cope, Hanna Jubran, Ed Stallweg, Paul Clifford, Sylvie Debevec Henning, Charles Boklage presiding.
The chair called the meeting to order at approximately 2:30. Since there were several new members at the meeting, all committee members were asked to introduce themselves.
The first order of business was the reconstitution of the minutes of the September 2004 and December 2004 meetings.
The subcommittee chairs presented their reports:
· Alumni and University Awards for Outstanding teaching (Lida Cope)
The members have not yet completed their review of the 17-18 portfolios submitted. They will meet to select up to 12 applicants who will be asked to have a class videotaped. Tracy Blake will supervise the taping sessions, which need to be scheduled 3-4 weeks in advance. The committee will then select three award recipients: one for the Alumni Award and three for the University Awards.
· Max Ray Joyner Award (Linda Wolfe)
The members are reviewing the four applications and will meet on Feb. 15 to make their decision.
· ECU Award for Excellence in Research or Creative Activity (Charles Boklage)
The subcommittee is still reviewing applications.
· Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching and Board of Governors Distinguished Teaching Award (Dorothy Clayton)
The recipient of the former has been chosen. The award will be presented in the spring.
The subcommittee is beginning to review applicants for the six Distinguished Teaching Awards.
A candidate for the Max Gardner Award has been selected and the name sent to the Board of Governors.
It was decided that the minute taking duties would continue to rotate among those present.
It was decided that another meeting of the Awards Committee was not necessary this spring.
The meeting was adjourned at 3 pm. (Motion by Linda Wolfe, seconded by Ed Stellwag)
