ACTIONS OF MEETING

Description of action:  Called Meeting convened at 3:30

p.m.

Description of action:  Brenda Killingsworth called the

Calendar Committee meeting because President Molly

Broad directed Chancellor Eakin to have East Carolina

University make up the class day missed due to snow

(Tuesday, January 25, 2000). The Committee was charged

to recommend a schedule change for the remaining portion

of this semester that incorporates a Tuesday make-up day.

Description of action:  Discussion was held.  Two

choices were identified.  One was to make the reading day

(a Wednesday) a Tuesday and eliminate the reading day.

The other was to make Tuesday, May 2 a make-up

Tuesday and to make reading day, May 3 a Friday make-up

day.  Either choice does as little disruption to exams as is

possible.  Under the already approved calendar, Tuesday,

May 2 was to follow a Friday schedule and Wednesday,

May 3 was to be Reading Day.  The Committee agreed that

having Tuesday follow a Tuesday would be more beneficial

for those courses which have a clinical (off-campus)

component and would also have a certain amount of

symmetry and rationality.  The Committee noted that all

examinations scheduled for Thursday, May 4 were classes

that met on Tuesday-Thursday, so under Choice #2 above,

all classes (TT and MWF) would have at least a one day

gap between their last day of class and their examination.

Salman Abdulali made the motion and Brenda Killingsworth

seconded the motion to recommend to the Faculty Senate

that Tuesday, May 2, will follow a Tuesday schedule;

Wednesday, May 3, will follow a Friday schedule.  There

will be no reading day (examinations will begin as

scheduled on Thursday, May 4).  This change does not

affect weekend university schedule.  Motion carried

unanimously.

David Glascoff will take the recommendation to Faculty

Senate meeting on Tuesday, March 21, 2000 for Senate

action.

Brenda Killingsworth and David Glascoff thanked all in

attendance for the extra effort made to meet as requested.

Description of action:  Meeting adjourned at 4:08 p.m.

NEXT MEETING: Tuesday, March 28, 2000 at 3:30 p.m.

In Rawl Annex, 142.

ITEMS TO BE DISCUSSED:  Calendars for spring 2003

and summer 2003.

Respectfully Submitted,

Karen L. Elberson
