1)                 Approved without dissent the amended minutes of the 25 September 2003 meeting.

2)                 The committee discussed the previous practice of distributing the current unit’s catalog copy in Microsoft word to the unit during the early fall semester. Vice Provost Riva Reaves agreed to look into this as soon as her new position is filled.

3)                 Professor John Shearin, Director of the School of Theatre & Dance, spoke in support of his proposal to unbank DNCE 2051, 2061, 4076. In light of recent hires, the school wishes to now offer these courses. After brief discussion, J. Smith moved for approval, with a second by R. Mitchelson. Measure passed without dissent.

4)                 Professor Ron Graziani of the School of Art spoke in favor of the proposed Minor in Art History. After brief discussion, R. Mitchelson moved for approval, with a second by C. Estes. Motion passed without dissent.

5)                 The committee briefly discussed the Faculty Chair Niswander’s letter to the committee that requested the UCC to formulate a report to the Faculty Senate on what constitutes the “official” university catalog (paper copy vs. online). Professor Reaves indicated that her staff has obtained information regarding what the other campuses in the UNC system regard as their official catalog. She will speak with colleagues at other institutions and report at our next meeting.

6)                 R. Reaves reported to the committee the results of her search for any criteria to help guide units in their choice of the courses that satisfy their majors’ Cultural Diversity requirement. She reported that she found no such guidelines in place, and the last such action regarding Cultural Diversity dates from 1996. Discussion ensued on this matter, with committee members expressing concern that without any guiding criteria, the Cultural Diversity requirement was merely symbolic. Moreover, several members felt that the CD requirement should be a part of General Education rather than a graduation requirement. Hudson agreed to contact the chair of the Academic Standards Committee about the matter.

7)                 Meeting adjourned at 3:50 pm.
