12)    The committee briefly discussed the issue of the disputed mathematics courses and their proposed transfer from the Department of Mathematics to the Department of Mathematics and Science Education (see Faculty Senate Resolution #03-18). Hudson reported to the committee that the departmental curriculum committees had not succeeded in reaching agreement by the deadline. However, he stated that he and Dr. Preston believed a solution could be reached, but not before the deadline for the 2004 – 2005 catalog. Thus, the Department of Mathematics & Science Education requests that the cross-listing of the disputed courses (see the above resolution for the specific courses) approved only for the 2003 – 2004 catalog be retained for the 2004 – 2005 catalog while they work on new courses proposals and push them through the curriculum process. The committee took no action on this, but will again consider the issue in the early spring.

13)    The committee discussed the issue of what should constitute the official ECU catalog (online, printed, real-time, etc.). Professor Reaves again reported on the practices of various other system schools, including UNC-Charlotte, whose official catalog is already the online/CD version rather than paper. She reported that the paper copies of the ECU catalog costs the university $31,331 per year. Consultations with the Registrar and the university attorney suggest that a “real-time” catalog that reflects all current curricular changes is not a manageable concept. Moreover, it has been the practice for the past decade to activate all new courses and other curricular changes the semester following approval (rather than after the next catalog is printed). Thus, recognition of the online/CD catalog as the “official catalog” would involve no change in current practice with regard to when new courses or programs take effect.

The consensus of the committee was that:

·        the move to an online/CD version of the catalog is inevitable, so the main issue to resolve is when should this change take effect

·        before the official catalog is the online/CD one, the “user unfriendliness” of the current online catalog must be corrected

·        in order to study the options of putting the catalog online in the best possible manner, we should retain the paper copy as the official catalog for the 2004 – 2005 year, and make the change with the 2005 – 2006 catalog

Hudson will formulate a report to the Chair of the Faculty Niswander and disseminate to the committee via email in early January.

14)          Meeting adjourned at 4:32 pm.
