Minutes of the 11 January 2001 meeting

of the University Curriculum Committee

 

Present: Michael Aho, Ron Graziani, Iona Poston,

Thomas Huener, Steven Estes, Greg Lapicki, Elizabeth Smith,

James Smith, Rick Taylor, David Batie, Rita Reeves and Sharon Bland.

 

The meeting was called to order at 2:00 and the minutes of

the 9 November meeting were approved.

 

John Stevens presented the package of changes from Classics.

Rick Taylor moved approval- Steve Estes seconded. The motion passed.

     

Sylvie Henning presented the request from French. Steve Estes

moved approval-  Iona Poston seconded. The motion passed.

 

Bruce Southard lead a group from the English Department in

presenting various requests. The new courses were approved.

There was discussion concerning the granting of Humanities

credit for the courses: ENGL 2700, 2740 & 3750. The discussion

centered on the what was the committee's definition of Humanities:

that listed on page 57 of the catalog and specifying Literature

or that listed in a Senate resolution and part of planning documents

with a broader definition. The committee voted to adopt the

broader definition and approve the courses for General Education credit.

education humanities credit for ENGL 2700, 2740 & 3750. *

Brian Love presented the changes requested from the Chemistry

Department. Greg Lapicki moved approval- Iona Poston seconded.

The motion passed.

 

Tim Hudson and Vallery DeBellis presented the request from

Mathematics. Rick Taylor moved approval- Ron Graziani seconded.

The motion passed.

 

The item from construction management was deferred until

the next meeting.

 

Scott Delania presented the revised course from the Decision

Sciences Department. Iona Poston moved approval- Michael Aho

seconded. The motion passed.

 

The chair presented the last two items of prerequisite

changes from the department of Geology and the School of Art.

Ron Graziani moved approval-  Rick Taylor seconded. The motion

passed.    

 

The meeting was adjourned at 4:10

Classical Studies Minor (2000-2001 undergraduate

The Classical Studies Minor is an interdisciplinary

program in the College of Arts and Sciences. The

minimum requirement is 24 s.h., which includes

required courses in history and either Latin or

Greek. The program, with electives in art, classical

studies, English, foreign languages, history,

philosophy and religious studies, is designed to

encourage students to study all aspects of the

ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome. A maximum

of 6 s.h. from each of the following may count toward

the classical studies minor: courses used to satisfy

the general education requirements; LATN or GRK

courses used to satisfy the foreign language

requirement for the BA degree; directed readings in

LATN or GRK; and study abroad programs approved by

the director. Additional courses beyond those listed

may be approved by the director if they significantly

advance the student's understanding of classics. No

semester hours counted toward the student's major may

count toward the classical studies minor. In many

cases, prerequisites for courses listed below will be
