UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
MINUTES OF FEBRUARY 9, 1995
The University Curriculum Committee met on Thursday, February 9,
1995 at 1:30 p.m. in Brewster B-104.
The Minutes of December 8, 1994 were approved. Powers moved
approval. Seconded by Harris. Passed.
Carol Techman, Coordinator for the undergraduate Rehabilitation
Services program, requested the addition of REHB 4990
(Rehabilitation Services Internship) and revisions to the BS in
Rehabilitation Services. Gartman moved approval as amended.
Seconded by Powers Passed.
John Stevens, Department of Foreign Languages, and William
Seavey, curriculum coordinator for the Classical languages
program, requested the double-listing of ENGL 3460 (Classical
Mythology) as CLAS 3460 and requested its acceptability for
general education credit. The change necessitates revisions to
the Classical Studies Minor as well as revisions to the BA and BS
majors and the minor in English. Harris moved approval as
amended. Seconded by Foley. Passed.
Edward Wheatley, Chair of the Department of Marketing, requested
revisions to the BSBA by deleting the concentrations in Marketing
Management and Retailing Management; the establishment of a new
concentration in Marketing; the deletion of MKTG 4772; banking
MKTG 4462 and 4352; and the addition of MKTG 4332 (Professional
Selling), MKTG 4342 (Sales Force Management), MKTG 4762 (Services
Marketing), and MKTG 4790 (Distribution Management). Shea moved
approval as amended. Seconded by Smith. Passed
The addition of CSCI 5210 (Operating Systems) and CSCI 5220
(Program Translation) was requested by Karl Abrahamson, Computer
Science coordinator of the Mathematics Department. He also
requested the renumbering of CSCI 4800 to CSCI 5800 (Artificial
Intelligence). Gartman moved approval. Seconded by Powers.
Passed.
Tony Schreiber, Director of the Interpreter Preparation Minor,
requested changing the name of the Interpreter Preparation Minor
to Sign Language Studies/Interpreter Preparation Minor. Revisions
to the prerequisites for CSDI 3090 and 3990 were requested and a
new course, CSDI 3091 (Interpretation/Transliteration Laboratory)
was presented necessitating revisions in the minor. Shea moved
approval as amended. Seconded by Harris. Passed.
Parmalee Hawk, Director of Teacher Education, Lawrence W.S. Auld,
Chair of the Department of Library Studies and Educational
Technology, Michael Vitale, Department of Foundations and
Research, and John T. Richards, Chair of the Department of
Special Education, requested the addition of three new courses;
EDUC 4400 (Foundations of School Learning, Motivation, and
Assessment), EDTC 4001 (Technology in Education), and SPED 4010
(Exceptional Students in the Regular Classroom). In addition,
they requested the deletion of the speech course requirement from
all teacher education degree programs. Foley moved approval as
amended. Seconded by Powers. Passed.
John C. Whitehead, from the Department of Economics, requested
revisions of ECON 3850 to ECON 4850 (Resource Economics) and
changes to the prerequisites and course description. Lapas moved
approval. Seconded by Shea. Passed.
Leo E. Zonn, Chair of the Department of Geography, Paul A. Gares
and Jonathan Bascom of the Department of Geography requested the
addition of GEOG 2400 (Spatial Data Management), 2500 (Map and
Aerial Photo Interpretation) 3250 (Environmental Hazards), GEOG
5400 (Advanced Remote Sensing), GEOG 5600 (Geographic Information
Systems II); requested the renumbering of GEOG 3005 to 2300, 3072
to 3500, 3500 to 4050,3440 to 3400, 4060 to 4500, 4067 to 4600,
5085, . 5086 to 4400; requested revisions of GEOG 1100,2100,2110;
and requested the deletion of GEOG 2008, 3083. The above changes
necessitated revisions to the BA major and minor in Geography,
and the BS in Applied Geography. Shea moved approval as amended.
Seconded by Powers. Passed.
The committee discussed the first draft of a procedures report
prepared by Jannis Shea, James O. Smith, and Sharon Bland which
outlines guidelines for submission of materials to the University
Curriculum Committee. Additions and editorial comments were made
and will be attached to these minutes as draft two.
The committee discussed a memorandum from Karen Krupa, chair of
the General Education Committee, dated February 1, 1995 which
requested input regarding a potential community college
articulation agreement which would allow students who have earned
an Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree to receive
all general education credits upon their admission to East
Carolina University. No action was taken.
The meeting adjourned at 4:30 p.m. The next regularly scheduled
meeting will be February 23, 1995 at 1:30 p.m. in Brewster B-
104.
REMINDER: The deadline for submission of materials to be
considered for inclusion in the 1995 Catalog Supplement is March
15, 1995 for inclusion on the March 23 meeting agenda.
