UNIVERSITY CURRICULUM COMMITTEE
MINUTES OF MARCH 23, 1995
The University Curriculum Committee met on Thursday, March
23, 1995 at 1:30 p.m. in Brewster B-104.
The Minutes of February 23, 1995 were approved as amended by
correcting the catalog minutes of February 9, 1995. Gartman
moved approval. Seconded by Harris. Passed.
Howard Barnes, Chair of the Department of Child Development
and Family Relations, School of Human Environmental
Sciences, requested the addition of HESC 3999 (Issues in
Human Environmental Sciences: An Integrated Approach), 4999
(A Multifaceted Approach to Professional Development in
Human Environmental Sciences); the deletion of HESC 1001,
2001, 3001, CDFR 2202; the banking of NUHM 5050, 5305, CDFR
2290, 3203, 4411, 5420; revisions to the majors in Nutrition
and Dietetics, Hospitality Management, Merchandising,
Apparel and Textiles, Interior Design, Child Development and
Family Relations, Community Services, Child Life and B-K
Teacher Education; revisions to CDFR 2201, 5366, 5413, 5414,
5415, 5408; and revisions to the CDFR minor. Harris moved to
postpone due to materials missing from the packet of
information. Seconded by Ayers. Passed. Materials will be
reconsidered at a future meeting.
Calvin Mercer, Director of the Religious Studies program,
requested revisions to the Religious Studies minor; and
revisions to RELI 5000. Foley moved approval as amended.
Seconded by Lapas. Passed, however concern was expressed
regarding not including courses in Latin as an option in the
minor. The committee also considered a Request for
Authorization to Plan a New Degree Program in Religious
Studies. The committee looked favorably upon the request to
authorize a new degree. Concerns were expressed regarding
the actual real costs involved in sustaining such a program.
Maurice Simon, Chair of the Undergraduate Curriculum
Committee, Department of Political Science, requested
revisions to POLS 4107 (Topics in Comparative Politics) and
POLS 4380 (Topics in International Politics); and the
addition of POLS 3290 (Conflict and Peace in the Post-Cold
War Era). Lapas moved approval. Seconded by Gartman. Passed.
Richard Caston, Chair of the Department of Sociology, and
Martin Schultz, from the Department of Sociology, requested
revisions to the B.S. in Applied Sociology and B.A. in
Sociology; the addition of SOCI 4200 (Advanced Techniques in
Quantitative Sociology), SOCI 4201 (Advanced Techniques in
Applied Research), SOCI 4202 (Special Topics in Applied
Social Research), SOCI 4322 (Law and Social Change), SOCI
4500 (Work and Organizations); the banking of SOCI 3214,
3429, 4960; the deletion of SOCI 3016; and revisions to SOCI
3213, 3216, 3410 ,4800, 4385, 4950, 4951, 4952. Ayers moved
to postpone pending clarification of information regarding
SOCI 4200 with regard to course content and laboratory
contact hours. Seconded by Harris. Passed. Materials will be
reconsidered at a future meeting.
Jim Keller, Acting Chair, Department of Physician Assistant
Studies, School of Allied Health, requested consideration of
a Request for Authorization to Establish a New Degree
program in Physician Assistant Studies; he requested the
addition of the BSPA (contingent upon GA approval); the
addition of the following new courses: PADP 3000 (The role
of the Physician Assistant and the History, Philosophy and
Ethics of Medical Practice), 3100 (Clinical Medicine and
Surgery I), 3200 (Clinical Medicine and Surgery II), 3300
(Physical Diagnosis), 3400 (Communication Skills for
Physician Assistants), 3500 (Pharmacology), 3600 (Surgery
and Emergency Medicine Skills), 3700 (Emergency Medicine
II), 3800 (Behavioral Medicine and Psychosocial Issues in
Health Care), 3900 (Public Health and Preventive Medicine
for Physician Assistants), 4000 (General Medicine Clinical
Practicum), 4100 (General Surgery Clinical Practicum), 4200
(Ambulatory Care Clinical Practicum), 4300 (Rural Health
Clinical Practicum), 4400 (Community Health Clinical
Practicum), ANAT 4310, 4311 (Gross Anatomy), 4320, 4321
(Neuroanatomy); and revisions to HPRO 4330. Joyner moved
approval as amended. Seconded by Wease. Passed.
Scott B. Watson, Chair of the Science Education Curriculum
Committee, requested revisions to the B.S. in Science
Education. Harris moved to postpone pending consultation
with the Departments of Biology, Chemistry, Geology, and
Physics with letters being requested showing support of the
proposed revisions. Seconded by Foley. Passed. Materials
will be reconsidered at a future meeting.
Lawrence Auld, Chair of the Department of Library Studies
and Educational Technology, requested the addition of LIBS
4950 (Literature for Children) and the double-listing with
ENGL 4950. Smith moved approval. Seconded by Lapas. Passed.
Lawrence Auld, Chair, Judith Donnalley, and Jeanne Scafella,
from the Department of Library Studies and Educational
Technology, requested revisions to the B.S. in
Communications; the addition of a minor in Electronic Mass
Media Studies- the addition of the following new courses:
EMST 1010 (Introduction to Electronic Mass Media Studies),
2020 (Producing Electronic Mass Media Messages), 2030
(Information for Electronic Mass Media), 2520 (Advanced
Electronic News Gathering and Reporting), 3010 (Non-News
Media Features), 4010 (Electronic Mass Media, Culture, and
Society), 4260 (Audio and Video Programming for Education),
4530 (Critical Perspectives of Electronic Mass Media), 4540
(International Electronic Mass Media Systems), 4950
(Electronic Mass Media Proseminar), 4991, 4992 (Internship-
Seminar)- and renumbering of the COMM courses transferred to
the EMST program. The committee chair noted for the record
that a memorandum had been received by all committee members
from Harrell Allen, Kathryn Greene, and Mary-Ann Leon,
Communication Department, dated March 20, 1995 which
expressed concern with the EMST proposals. Foley moved
approval of the entire packet as amended. Seconded by Wease.
Passed.
Brad Foley, Assistant Dean of the School of Music, requested
the unbanking of MUSC 5937; revisions to MUSC 0056; and the
addition of MUSC 0076 (Music Fundamentals Lab-Aural
Perception), 4507, 4508, 4509 (Topics and Issues in Music).
Gartman moved approval. Seconded by Wease. Passed.
Ivan Wallace, Chair of the Department of BVTE, and Randy L.
Joyner, Chair of the BVTE Curriculum Committee, requested
revisions to BVTE 5500, 5503; and the deletion of BVTE 5501.
Ayers moved approval. Seconded by Wease. Passed.
David S. Phelps, Director of the NC Studies Program,
requested the addition of a North Carolina Studies Minor;
and the addition of two new courses, NCST 4000 (Windows on
North Carolina's Past) and NCST 4010 (Contemporary Issues
and Problems in North Carolina). Wease moved approval.
Seconded by Gartman. Passed.
Celeste Winterberger, Chair of the School of Industry and
Technology's Curriculum Committee, and Doug Kruger, Chair of
the Department of Construction Management, requested
revisions to the admissions statement for Industrial
Technology and Construction Management; revisions to DESN
2034, 2035,3032,3033, 4030, 4031, CMGT 4501, 3662,3663,
4660; the addition of CMGT 3000 (Construction Work
Experience), 366~, 3663 (Building Systems II), 3100, 3101
(Architectural Plans and Analysis); and revisions to the
Construction Management major and the Industrial Technology
minor. Gartman moved approval. Seconded by Wease. Passed.
Celeste Winterberger, Chair of the School of Industry and
Technology's Curriculum Committee, and Mulu Wubneh, Chair of
the Department of Planning, and Planning faculty members,
Wes Hankins and Shen Guoqiang, requested revisions to the
B.S. in Urban and Regional Planning and the minor in Urban
and Regional Planning; the addition of PLAN 3015 (Planning
for Circulation), 3020 (Environmental Planning), 4040
(Community Facilities Planning and Capital Budgeting), 30~ 1
(Computer Applications in Planning), 4046 (Planning and
Design Studio), 4099 (Practicum in Planning), 5095
(International Development Planning); and revisions to PLAN
3021,3022,3031,3032, 4086, 5065. Gartman moved approval.
Seconded by Wease. Passed.
The committee discussed a proposed response to "Proposed
Articulation Agreement. . ." A motion was made to send a
memorandum to Patricia Anderson, Chair of the Faculty.
Grossnickle moved approval. Seconded by Wease. Passed.
A request was made by the curriculum committee of the
College of Arts and Sciences to request a review of General
Education requirements. As this is under the purview of the
General Education committee, the request was forwarded to
Patricia Anderson for appropriate action.
A request was received from Patricia Anderson regarding a
diversity requirement for students. This item will be taken
up at the next meeting.
Discussion was postponed on the second draft of a report
regarding revisions to the course proposal form prepared by
Brian Harris, Evelyn Powers, and Hugh Wease; and on the
second draft of a procedures report prepared by Jannis Shea,
James O. Smith, and Sharon Bland which outlines guidelines
for submission of materials to the University Curriculum
Committee.
The meeting adjourned at 6:15 p.m. The next regularly
scheduled meeting will be April 13 1995 at 1:30 p.m. in
Brewster B-104.
