Minutes of March 28, 1996
The University Curriculum Committee met on Thursday March 28,
1996 at 1:30 P.M. in Brewster B-104.
Minutes of the March 14 meeting were approved as amended: Neal
was absent; HES (middle of paragraph) change to read...AMID:
apparel textile major cognate change to ENGL 3880, ITEC 2010,
DSCI 2223, 9 s.h..
Harrell Allen, Katherine Green & Marina Kramer (COMM) presented
the Communications package tabled earlier, including courses for
general education credit and two new courses; COMM 4700 & 4705.
Neal moved approval of new courses. Powers seconded. Motion
passed. The Chair removed the request for general education
credit from the agenda pending clearance through Arts and
Sciences.
Bob Rasch, Craig Malmrose, & Leland Walland (ART) presented new
courses ART 3250, 4240, & 4250. Graziani moved approval as
amended. Knight seconded. Motion passed.
Christopher Ulffers and Rita Reaves presented Writing Intensive
requirements for second degree students: "All second degree
students will be required to complete at least 3 hours of writing
intensive coursework in the major." Neal moved approval. Powers
seconded. Motion passed.
Changes in Alcohol/Drug Studies postponed.
A request to double list NURS 5011 with GERO/SOCW 5011 was
returned to School of Nursing.
Jim Joyce presented Physics Department revisions including: new
courses PHYS 5700, PHYS 5900; revised courses PHYS 5600, 5601,
RONC/PHYS 5370; rename PHYS 5715; delete PHYS 5450, 5716, 5717,
5850 & 5851.; bank PHYS 5710, 5711, 5720 & 5721. Harris moved
approval as amended. Shea seconded. Motion passed.
George Evans, Jim Hix, & Brian Love (CHEM) presented Chemistry
department revisions including: description of Honors Program;
revise and renumber CHEM 4103; & change credit hours for CHEM
5525,5526 & 5527. Harris moved approval. Powers seconded. Motion
passed, with 3 abstentions.
Steven Cerutti (Foreign Language) presented catalog copy change
pertaining to foreign languages for all B.A. degree programs in
the College of Arts and Sciences. Shea moved approval. Neal
seconded. Motion failed.
Linda Rickard & Jim Decker presented changes from the Department
of Exercise and Sport Science including deleting EXSS 3546 &
3555; editorial changes and clarifications to descriptions of
EXSS 3545, 5303 & 5903. Powers moved approval. Mohammed seconded.
Motion passed.
Karen Hancock, Clint Longacre, & Susan McGhee (EXSS) presented
Department of Recreation and Leisure studies revisions including:
change of admission requirement; change in general education
requirements; change course list for leisure services management
delete CDFR 3203 & ART 5810, add PSYC 3241, change PLAN 3001 to
3021, add statement concerning substitutions; change course list
for Therapeutic Recreation cognate delete SOCW 4001, HLTH 5355,
add course substitution statement; change prerequisites for RCLS
3230, 3232, 3300,4102, 4120 & 4122; delete RCLS 2601[currently
banked]; bank RCLS 2290, 2291, 2292, 2390, 2391, 2392 &3301. Shea
moved approval of items 2 - 16 as amended. Neal seconded. Motion
passed.
Evelyn Farrior (HES) presented Department of Nutrition and
Hospitality Management request to increase NUHM Dietetics major
by one hour, revise NUHM 4303,4304 & 4208; new course NUHM 4209 &
bank NUHM 5211 & 5212. Shea moved approval. Powers seconded.
Motion passed.
Dave Hillis and Celeste Winterberger presented School of Industry
and Technology package including: Department of Aerospace Studies
changes in administrative requirements and changes in course
titles and descriptions; department of Construction Management
change prerequisite CMGT 4662 & 4664; Department of Industrial
Technology change prerequisites ELEC 2054, 2055, MANF 3036,3037;
change prerequisites and description DESN 3036, 3037, 4234 &
4235; change description ELEC 4505; change degree requirements
Design and Drafting; revise MANF 3500, ITEC 3290 & 3291. Mohammed
moved approval as amended. Powers seconded. Motion passed.
Barbara Memory presented School of Music request to include BIOL
2130 as science cognate and count as general education
requirement. The Committee noted that the Biology Department
would need to initiate this request .
Carol Cox (NURS) presented request to delete NURS 1000 as a
required Nursing course and revise NURS 4320 from 2 s.h. to 3
s.h. Powers moved approval. Mohammed seconded. Motion passed.
Other Committee business. Honors Programs. The Chair will submit
a request to the Chair of the Faculty to request that the Honors
Committee prepare a consistent statement to help departments
establish honors programs.
Meeting adjourned at 5:20 P.M. The next Curriculum Committee
Meeting is scheduled for Thursday April 11, 1996 at 1:30 P.M. in
