Minutes of the University Curriculum Committee
2:00, 13 September, 2001
Brewster B-104
In attendance: D. Batie, T. Huener, D. Knickerbocker, G. Lapicki, B. Markowski, R. Reaves, E. Smith, R. Taylor
Excused: S. Estes
I. The Chair called the meeting to order. D. Batie moved to approve the minutes of 23 August 2001. R. Taylor seconded. The motion was approved.
II. The Chair announced that the cutoff date to make the next catalogue had been added to the committee’s web page, as well as a link to all meeting dates. He also informed the committee that an error had been made in the catalogue copy for the meeting of 26 April 2001: under the BS in biology, BIOL 5480, 5481 should be revised to read BIOL 4480, 4481. He noted that this correction would appear in this meeting’s catalogue copy.
III. The Chair reported that the ad hoc committee on the reformatting of the course proposal forms decided to recommend against placing the form on line in a format that could be filled out on line and sent directly to the UCC, noting that since it would not save units time, it would probably not see much use. They decide to instead to place the form on a web page in which users could click on any section and see a hot box explaining what information was necessary, and giving both correct examples and common errors. They will coordinate with the ad hoc committee preparing an informational workshop on submissions to include the latter’s materials on said page.
IV. Gil Leebrick of the School of Art presented the new course ART 3260. After discussion, T. Heuner moved approval, D. Batie seconded. The motion was approved.
V. Under A.O.B., Professor Leebrick made suggestions regarding the difficulty of using the present proposal document. After discussion, it was decided that the ad hoc committee would attempt to make format changes based on his comments in order to make it more user friendly. R. Reaves asked the Chair to inquire to Bob Morrison about the Faculty Senate’s policy to distribute all committee correspondence to all members through the committee mailbox, noting the inconvenience to committee members due to the great volume of documents received, many of which are only working drafts. The Chair promised to do so, and stated that, in the mean time, he would circulate final versions the Thursday before meetings under the heading “re:final versions”.
VI. The meeting was adjourned at 2:25.
Respectfully submitted,
Dale Knickerbocker, Chair
