Minutes of the University Curriculum Committee
2:00 p.m. 12 September 2002, Brewster B-104
Members present: Michael Bassman, David Batie, Paul Gares, Ron Graziani, Timothy Hudson, Dale Knickerbocker, Ron Mitchelson, Rita Reaves, Thomas Skalko, Elizabeth Smith
Excused: Linda Keane
I. Knickerbocker called the meeting to order and offered apologies on behalf of Keane.
II. Gares moved approval of the minutes of 8-22-02, Graziani seconded. Motion passed unanimously.
III. Al Muller from English presented revisions to ENGL 4325 and resulting changes in the English Education degree program. Discussion ensued about the extra workload due to the portfolio requirement, whether it justified the increase in hours, and whether the material to be included would be new or from previous courses. Skalko moved approval, Hudson seconded. Motion passed unanimously.
IV. Sandra Warren presented new course SPED 3001 and resulting changes in the BS degrees in SPED. Discussion ensued concerning the NCATE, CEC and NC Dept. of Public Instruction assessments that motivated the changes, the new sequencing of courses, and the use of technology in the course. Graziani moved approval, Hudson seconded. The motion passed 9-1.
V. Margie Gallagher presented new courses NUHM 1300 and 4300. Discussion ensued concerning whether unit assessment data formed part of the justification for these courses. Gallagher responded that it was and that she would have her unit document this. Graziani moved approval contingent on receipt of those materials by the Chair, Hudson seconded. Motion passed unanimously. She then presented prerequisite changes for NUHM 3350, 3104, 3105, 4600, 4110, 4244, 4308, 4440, and 4450. Mitchelson moved approval, Skalko seconded. Motion passed unanimously. Gallagher presented changes in the BS degree in Nutrition and Dietetics and Minors in Nutrition and Hospitality Management. Skalko moved approval, Hudson seconded. Motion passed unanimously. Gallagher presented banking of NUHM 3393, 4208 and 4209. Skalko moved approval, Graziani seconded. Motion passed unanimously.
VI. The committee discussed whether or not it was necessary to bring the question of transferal of MATH content courses to the School of Education before the committee. Reaves stated that she would contact the Chair of the Transition Committee, Bob Thompson, as to whether he intends to do so.
There being no further business before the committee, the meeting adjourned at 2:50.
