The University Curriculum Committee met on Thursday September 28,
1995 at 1:30 P.M. in Brewster B-104.
Minutes of September 14, 1995 approved as amended.
The Chair presented a request from the School of Music to unbank
MUSC 5466 Indigenous Music of Europe and America. Motion to by
George Knight. Seconded by Evelyn Powers. Passed.
The committee discussed the letter from the Implementation
Committee on Diversity. The report of the Diversity Committee was
sent to the Chancellor, who accepted the recommendations and
forwarded a request to the Chair of the Faculty Senate. Since
this recommendation has curriculum implications the Chair of the
Senate, Patricia Anderson, requested the Curriculum and General
Education Committees to review the recommendation and report to
the Educational Policies and Planning Committee.
After a lengthy discussion, and review of the General education
Committee's report on the subject, the Curriculum Committee
reached a consensus which the Chair will forward to the
Educational Policies and Planning Committee.
The Curriculum Committee supports students being exposed to
diversity. However, we have serious concerns with the definition
of a second culture and the implementation of such a requirement.
This educational diversity can be determined and achieved through
Unit Curriculum Committees, content in major departments, and the
advisement process. Until some of these operational questions are
answered we cannot recommend this as a degree change. We feel
this would only create further bureaucracy and/or committee
structure. Since this is a curriculum matter, the Committee is
willing to continue to discuss and make recommendations. The
chair will draft a letter to the EPP committee for the committee
to review.
Meeting adjourned at 3:20 P.M.
The next regularly scheduled meeting is Thursday October 12, 1995
at 1:30 P.M.
