A CALL FOR NOMINATIONS
Board of Governors Award
for Excellence in Teaching
The
Board of Governors Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes the sustained
record of distinguished teaching by a tenured
All
letters of nomination must be in the Center for Faculty Excellence Office, Old
Cafeteria Complex 2305, East Carolina University, no later than 5 PM on
September 15, 2008. All portfolios are
due November 3, 2008; nominated faculty need to be informed as soon as possible
in order to assemble the required documents.
THE BOARD OF GOVERNORS
AWARD FOR EXCELLENCE IN TEACHING
I. Eligibility for Selection
Nominees must:
1. be
tenured at
2. have
taught at
3.
have demonstrated excellent or exceptional teaching ability over a
sustained period of time;
4.
be teaching in the academic year in which they are selected; and
5.
not have received this award previously while teaching at any UNC
institution.
II. Selection Procedures and Guidelines
1. Faculty,
students, administrators, and alumni may nominate a faculty member, or a
faculty member may nominate himself/herself for the Board of Governors Award
for Excellence in Teaching. Nomination
letters, not to exceed two pages in length, should explain why the nominee
deserves the award. Letters of
nomination must be in the Center for Faculty Excellence office, Old Cafeteria
Complex 2305, no later than 5 pm on September 15, 2008.
2. Nominated
faculty who wish to pursue the award must have their portfolios in the Center
for Faculty Excellence office, Old Cafeteria Complex, no later than 5 p.m. on
November 3, 2008.
3. The
portfolio of materials must include:
o
an itemized list of all materials in the portfolio;
o
a brief written statement (not to exceed three pages, double-spaced)
which articulates the nominee's teaching philosophy and methods used to achieve
his or her educational goals;
o
copies of syllabi and other relevant course materials from no more
than three different courses taught by the faculty member within the last three
years, as well as a brief explanation of how the courses were assigned;
o
a summary of Student Opinion of Instruction Survey (SOIS) student
ratings for all courses that have been evaluated over the previous three years
(Unit teaching evaluations may be substituted for courses where the SOIS is not
administered). Nominees will be provided
a format for the summary of SOIS student ratings;
o
copies of at least two peer evaluations of teaching, both of which
include a classroom evaluation;
o
a copy of a current curriculum vitae or resume of the nominee, not to
exceed three pages in length;
o
a letter of support from the departmental chair or the dean of the
college or school;
o
typed letters of support from two colleagues and two former students
of the nominee, currently enrolled or alumni;
o
a twenty-minute video of the nominee teaching a university course
within the last year (Contact the Center for Faculty Excellence office and/or
college ITC). The standard (unedited)
video should display twenty consecutive minutes of teaching and include a pan
of the audience. Faculty may select the
twenty-minute segment of the taped lesson for submission with their portfolio;
and
o
any additional materials, not to exceed four pages, that in the
opinion of the nominee will assist the selection committee in reaching a
decision.
4. All
portfolio materials submitted by the two finalists will be kept on file for
public review in the Center for Faculty Excellence office, Old Cafeteria
Complex 2306.
5. By
late January 2009, the selection committee1 will send forward to
the Chancellor the names of two finalists and the supporting documentation for
each. The Chancellor will then forward
to the Board of Governors the name of one finalist from
The selection committee will be convened by the Coordinator, Center for Faculty Development, at East Carolina University and consists of 2 members of the Academic Awards Committee, elected by the committee; 1 faculty member each appointed by the Vice Chancellors for Academic Affairs and Health Sciences; 1 faculty member appointed by the Chair of the Faculty; and 1 student member appointed by the President of the Student Government Association.
