Agenda Item: Discussion of a
possible First-Day Attendance Policy
Discussion: Cindy Elmore presented a survey paper “The Communication
Classroom: A Case Study Analysis of Student Attendance Habits and Perceptions
of a First-day Attendance Policy” to the committee members. The reasons to
adopt the First-day attendance policy are: 1) the attendance rate on the first
day of class is low; 2) the students who don’t attend the first day of class
block other students who need the course; 3) they also often drop the course
too late for other students to get enrolled; and 4) traditionally low
attendance on the first day of classes may cause faculty members to cancel the
first day of class. The committee members discussed if such a policy would
contribute to the improvement of student retention rate at ECU. The committee
members also discussed potential issues related to the implementation of such
policy, such as a students’ failure or inability to notify an instructor of a
first-day absence due to emergency and the possibility for confusion and inconsistency
between departments with different policies. Wendy Sharer suggested that the
committee needs to collect more information related to the policy before moving
it forward. Todd Johnson pointed out an ambiguous statement regarding the
appropriate deans for the student appealing process in current Class Attendance
and Participation Regulations of ECU.
Action Taken: The committee will
conduct research on the First-day attendance policies from other institutions.
The committee will also revise the ambiguous language regarding appeal
processes in the Class Attendance and Participation Regulations.
Assigned Additional Duties To:
Wendy Sharer will provide an edited version of the Class Attendance and
Participation Regulations in next meeting. Dana Espinosa and David Siegel will
collect information related to the First-day Attendance Policy from
Universities in the UNC system and ECU peer institutions.

Discussion: Wendy Sharer updated the committee on the current status of
the plus/minus grading policy. It is still pending at the Chancellor’s office.
