Call to Order

Rigsby (Chair) called the meeting to order at 3:00 P.M.

 

Minutes

A motion was made and seconded to approve the March 22, 2004meeting minutes.  The motion passed.

 

Old Business

 

General Education

Rigsby informed the committee that the current draft of the revised Goals for General Education would be distributed (hardcopy) at the 04-20-04 Faculty Senate meeting.  Simultaneously the draft will be sent electronically to the faculty.  At this time the draft is for information only.  Rigsby will inform the Faculty Senate of the committee’s intention to hold forums on this issue in the fall.

 

New Business

 

Annual Report

Rigsby solicited comments for the committees’ annual report. Rigsby will send a draft of the report to committee members for feedback.

 

ENGL 3720

A motion was made and seconded to grant general education (humanities) credit for ENGL 3720-Writing Systems of the World.  After discussion, the motion passed.

 

ENGL 4950

A motion was made and seconded to grant general education (humanities) credit for ENGL 4950-Literature for Children.  After discussion a motion was made and seconded to table this item.  The motion passed.  The Chair will request a representative from the Department of English attend a future committee meeting to support this proposal.

 

GRBK 3001

A motion was made and seconded to grant general education (humanities) credit for GRBK 3001-Great Books of Science.  After discussion, a motion was made and seconded to table this item.  The motion passed.  The Chair will request a representative from the Great Books program attend a future committee meeting to speak to this proposal.

 

GERM 2211

A motion was made and seconded to grant general education (humanities) credit to GERM 2211-Intermediate German Composition and Conversation.  After discussion, the motion failed.

 

GERM 2300

A motion was made and seconded to grant general education (humanities) credit for GERM 2300-Introduction to German Literature.  After discussion, the motion passed.

A motion was made and seconded to grant general education (humanities) credit for GERM 3340-Civilization of the German-Speaking World.  After discussion, the motion passed.

A motion was made and seconded to grant general education (fine arts) credit for DNCE 3703-International Ballroom and Folk Dance Styles.  After discussion, the motion passed.

Grade Inflation

The committee briefly discussed the issue of “grade inflation.” Specifically addressed was the prevalence of this phenomenon at ECU and what potential role the Academic Standards Committee may play in combating it.

 

Committee Service

Rigsby acknowledged committee members for their outstanding service during 2003-2004.
