Upon election of the new officers, Johna Faulconer, in the absence of the elected chair, initiated discussion of goal setting and new business.  The calendar for 2010-2011 should be submitted to the Faculty Senate for approval at their March 31, 2009 meeting.  From the annual report for last year’s committee business carried over included coordinating calendars with the county schools and Pitt Community College, continuing to compare ECU calendar with calendars at other UNC schools, exploring a week break at Thanksgiving, continuing study of faculty information calendar, and talking with the Graduate Administrative Board about dates in the calendar concerning graduate students.

The committee set goals for the current year:

1.        Create and finish calendar for 2010-2011 by February to be presented at the March 17th Faculty Senate Agenda meeting.

2.        Contact Graduate Administrative Board about dates in the calendar relevant to graduate students.

3.        Review common exam schedule and conflicts with 5:00 pm classes.

4.        Continue communications & consultations with Pitt Community College and Pitt County Schools.

5.        Compare ECU calendar with calendars at other UNC schools.

6.        Explore week break at Thanksgiving.

Faulconer discussed several items that will need to be considered in the development of the 2010-2011 calendar including move-in day, inclement weather, comparison to other colleges and universities, fall break in relationship to Thanksgiving break, and other suggestions that may be presented to the committee.  Linda Teel shared the 2009 Pitt Community College and Pitt County Schools calendars with the committee.

The committee looked at a spreadsheet format listing start dates, breaks, holidays, last day of classes, reading days, final exams, commencements and last day to drop for 2007-2008 academic calendars for UNC system schools.  Janice Tovey was asked to have the appropriate committee review the “last day to drop” at ECU in comparison to other UNC schools.  ECU has the earliest drop date.

The committee will next meet at 10:00 am on Wednesday, October 15.  The committee will work on the 2010-2011 calendar.  On behalf of the committee, Faulconer expressed appreciation for all the expertise Crammer had shared with the committee during his past years of service.             Meeting adjourned at 4:48 pm.
