ECU Faculty,

The Committee on Committees and Faculty Senate encourage you to participate in the shared faculty governance of ECU by agreeing to serve as a member of the Graduate Council and/or a University standing academic, appellate, administrative, Board of Trustees, or student union committee.  Faculty members currently serving on a University committee or council are to be commended for their dedication to University service.

Members of committees serve in accordance with their ability, training, and experience rather than as representatives of their electoral unit. If your membership term is expiring in Spring 2012 or if you are not currently on a University committee or council and wish to serve, please review the below information and consider service on one of the many committees or Graduate Council.

Ø  Description of University Standing Committees

Ø  List of current faculty serving on committees

The deadline for submission of a committee/council volunteer preference form is February 15, 2012.

The Faculty Senate will elect the membership of each University standing committee and up to four members of the Graduate Council at their organizational meeting in April 2012.  During the summer, committee/council members will be notified via email of scheduled Fall 2012 organizational meetings.

Faculty eligibility requirements for the University standing committees include:

(Members of the Faculty Governance Committee can not be elected concurrently to an appellate committee.)

(An administrative title refers to appointment as department chair in a college/school, unit administrator, dean, assistant or associate dean, vice chancellor, assistant or associate vice chancellor, chancellor, assistant or associate chancellor).

Members are elected to staggered three-year terms, which may extend to the beginning of the fall semester; faculty members are generally not elected to more than one academic committee.  Service on a single academic or administrative committee is limited to election to two consecutive 3-year terms with ineligibility for election to the same committee for at least one year.

Faculty eligibility requirements for the University Graduate Council include:

·        Holding full graduate faculty status and

·        Not serving as a graduate program coordinator.

Volunteer process is simple.

Interested faculty should complete the below volunteer preference form and forward it to the Faculty Senate office. Formal committee nominations will be included in the April 24, 2012 Faculty Senate meeting agenda.  Formal announcement of committee appointments will be made through the April 24, 2012 minutes and a July 2012 email detailing organizational meetings.

APPELLATE COMMITTEE MEMBERSHIP

The appellate committees provide a forum for faculty member appeals regarding employment. These committees are essential to shared governance.  It is desirable to have representatives from a broad spectrum of the academic community.  Please consider carefully the responsibility of service on these appellate committees since your service when participating in a hearing will be as a representative of the University.
