ACTIONS OF MEETING

Agenda Item:

The October 21, 2008, meeting minutes were approved as presented.

The November 18, 2008, meeting minutes will be available at the next meeting.

Agenda Item:

The Committee followed up with Janice Tovey, Chair of the Faculty, on discussions she has had in relation to fixed term faculty serving on standing University academic committees.  Following discussion, a motion was made and approved that fixed term faculty can not serve on standing University academic committees. This motion required no changes to existing policies and procedures.

Agenda Item:

Since there was no quorum at the November 18, 2008, committee meeting, approval of the proposed revisions to the University Environment Committee’s charge needed to be finalized.  Following discussion the proposed revisions discussed in depth at the November 18 meeting were approved.

The revised committee charge will be presented to the Faculty Senate in January 31 and February 24 for their first and second readings. Revisions to charges do not require the Chancellor’s approval, so following action by the Faculty Senate, the revised charge will be enforced.

Agenda Item:

The Committee discussed extensively the ongoing activities of the Continuing and Career Education Committee with current Committee Chair, Elaine Seeman.  It was noted that there are several areas in which the Committee should/could be more involved.  For example, within the Division of Continuing Studies, representatives from the Continuing and Career Education Committee could be involved with the Summer Study Abroad Committee, International Students Advisory Committee, Distance Education Administrative Council, Military Education Council, and Career Center.

A clearer definition of what Distance Education courses mean versus what Online courses mean to the University community is needed.  There seems to be a lot of confusion and this is hampering the committee’s involvement with the growing activities, councils, task forces, etc.

Janice Tovey was asked to approach Vice Chancellors for both Academic Affairs and Health Sciences to obtain a listing of current administrative committees (and their membership) who are handling many of the same issues outlined in the committee’s charge.  Once obtained, the Continuing and Career Education Committee can interact with those groups and improve the communication and coordination of efforts.

Elaine Seeman thanked the committee for the discussion and agreed to return to the Continuing and Career Education Committee with a list of issues to discuss.  She stated that she would return to the Committee on Committees if and when specific charge revisions were drafted.
