University Curriculum Committee
Minutes of October 27, 2005
Present:
Regular Members:
Ex Officio Members: L. Griffin, R. Mitchelson
Administrative: D. Coltraine
Excused: A. Arnold
Absent: M. Schinasi, D. Long, L. Warren, C. Jones
1 Minutes for 10/13/05 were approved without dissent.
2. Dr.
Tom Crawford, Geography, presented the Certificate
in Geographic Information Science curriculum revision proposal. The proposal
was approved without dissent.
3. Donna Hollar, Liaison, and David Batts,
ITEC, presented the proposal for changes in the BS ITEC degree program
The first discussion concerned
the addition of ITEC 3000 as a requirement for distance education students. The
proposal was approved without dissent.
The second discussion concerned the addition of IDIS 3780.
Warehousing and Materials Handling (3) (F,S) (P: IDIS
2771) to the Industrial Distribution and Logistics concentration. The proposal was
approved without dissent.
The third discussion concerned the deletion of MANF 3020, 3021. Introduction to
Computer Integrated Manufacturing (3,0) (S) (P: ITEC
2090; MANF) from the Manufacturing Systems concentration. The proposal
was approved without dissent.
The fourth discussion was regarding the proposal to
add a new certificate program and five new courses for the certificate. The
first discussion was regarding faculty resources for teaching these classes.
The presenters explained there are currently faculty in Engineering being hired
who can and will teach these classes. The committee suggested revising the
cover memo to reflect this. Discussion of ITEC 4150, 4250, 4350, 4450, 4550
(new course proposals) included suggestions for: revising course titles, course
objectives, prerequisites, affected departments including Biology, Chemistry,
and Environmental Health. The proposal for the new
certificate program and associated new courses were tabled for resubmission.
4. Michael Poteat attended the meeting to discuss ideas for preparing and evaluating appropriate course objectives. He indicated that while course objectives are useful for the curriculum process, they are not typically used in the SACS review process. What SACS is looking for is evidence of learning and of continuous improvement of programs. SACS does not require that courses be taught in a uniform manner. However, they do mandate that each educational program for academic credit be approved by the faculty and the administration. In some programs, syllabi are tied to learning outcomes but in most programs they are not.
Recommendations included using the phrase “learning objectives” and he offered to send us a couple of models that can be followed for writing quality objectives.
