  1. J. Neil called the meeting to order.  The minutes of the September 28, 2006 meeting were approved without dissent.

 

  1. Request from the Department of Mathematics and Science Education for prerequisite and degree revisions to the BS in Mathematics and Science Education degree.  The request to drop PHIL 1500 as a required course and add PSYC 1000, PSYC 3206, a history course and a literature course was approved.  The request to delete MATE or MATH 2275 and MATE or MATH 2935 and replace with MATE 2700 and MATE 2800 was approved.  The request to add PSYC 4305 as an alternative to EDUC 4400 was approved.

 

  1. Request from Thomas Harriot College of Arts & Sciences Interdisciplinary Programs for approval of new major and minor curricula and three new courses, AAAS 1000, AAAS 2000, and AAAS 4000, was approved with changes. 

 

  1. New Business Discussion:

 

Following discussion, it was decided that K. Snyder will add a notice to each meeting agenda and to the UCC webpage indicating that persons not listed on the agenda who wish to speak at the meeting should contact the Chair prior to the start of the meeting.  The committee will notify liaisons that if they or others from their departments/schools wish to present their views regarding a proposal on the UCC agenda that they are welcome to do so, and should follow the procedure mentioned above regarding speaking privileges.

 

K. Snyder distributed copies of 2006 Liaison Survey Report to committee members.  This document will be discussed at the October 26 meeting.

The major in African and African American Studies is an interdisciplinary degree program housed in the Thomas Harriot College of Arts and Sciences.  Its comparative focus and broad multidisciplinary emphasis complements many existing programs that seek to prepare undergraduate students for competitive careers and productive work in a global world of different cultures, political systems, and economic infrastructures.  Students pursuing a degree in AAAS will develop a broad perspective on human values and ethnic diversity, as well as an understanding of the socio-political, religious, and historical evidence related to African peoples, both in Africa and the diasporic communities of North America and the Atlantic World.  Students are encouraged to combine a major in AAAS with others at East Carolina University.  Minimum degree requirements is 126 s. h. of credit as follows:
