Faculty Governance Committee
Minutes of January 10, 2007
Regular members in
attendance: Anderson, Gilliland, Jones, Justiniano, Martinez, Morrison
Ex-officio members in
attendance: Horns, Mageean, Smith, Taggart
Others: Bonatz, Lee
The minutes of the December
13, 2006 meeting were approved after an editorial suggestion to Attachment
3.C.1.a. substituting “tenure” with “reappointment”.
The primary topic of
discussion was Faculty Evaluation of Administrators. Two models, or a
combination thereof, are under consideration.
The proposed addition to
Appendix L. Section H., which was discussed at the December meeting, was
discussed. More specifically, the unresolved portion that concerned research
creative activity was discussed. Motion to
delete the portion of the sentence reading “identifies and communicates
expectations for research and creative activity appropriate for constituency”
was passed.
Most of the remainder of the
meeting was spent discussing an article which appeared in the September-October
edition of Academe, presented in
summary form by Professor Martinez. Suggestions about ways to incorporate
appropriate elements of the model put forth in Academe were discussed. Bonatz expressed concern about the section
that calls for publication of a summary of the review of administrators. Selection
of the Faculty Review Committee was discussed, and it was decided to go with
the “mixed” model (rather than the Standing and Ad Hoc models), in which part
of the committee is elected by the faculty and part is appointed by
administrators.
A subcommittee consisting of
Justiniano, Martinez, Morrison and Taggart was formed to study ways to combine
the best elements of the two models under discussion. This subcommittee will
report to the next Governance Committee meeting.
Next committee meeting is Wednesday,
January 24, 2007, in 142 Rawl Annex.
Respectfully submitted,
Mark Jones, Professor
