Ex-officio members present: Mageean, Horns, Taggart

Members absent: Cope, Sheerer, Pagliari

Others present: Kristen Bonatz, Lori Lee, Linda Ingalls

I. The minutes of the previous meeting were approved

II. Chair Martinez discussed her work on the Chancellor’s leadership development task force. She stated that the task force’s work may still allow for inclusion of many of the components of the proposed evaluation of administrators that was developed by the Faculty Governance Committee.

The Committee discussed whether the recommendations from the Fixed Term Task Force should be included in a revision of Appendix L. It was decided that the Committee should wait on a soon to be reached conclusion to the work being done by the Chancellor’s leadership development task force so both tasks could be dealt with at the same time.

III. Agenda items for the remainder of the academic year.

Appendix C, whether to make changes pertinent to the work of the Fixed Term Task Force. Kristen Bonatz was asked to review the document for any possible legal issues. The entire committee was asked to review the document for upcoming discussions.

The Scholarship task force report, headed by Bob Morrison, will also be reviewed and examined for possible implementation.

Mageean stated that ECU is considering seeking designation of “Engaged” status, a new Carnegie classification. This may have Faculty Governance implications.

Joint appointments: Rigsby and Justiniano are compiling data for presentation early in the spring semester.

The FGC meetings scheduled for November 28 and February 27 are canceled.

Post-tenure Review and possible changes to the UNC Code: The FGC is going to send a letter to GA, President Bowles and the Executive Committee of the Faculty Assembly expressing the views of the ECU Faculty Senate. Rigsby will draft the letter.

Attention was brought concerning perceived conflicting statements in Appendix L over the formation of new self-governing autonomous units. This potential conflict was brought to the FGC’s attention by Margaret Bauer, Department of English.

The issue of shared positions will be discussed, spurred on by a request from the Department of Geography.

Meeting adjourned. The next meeting of the FGC will be held on November 14. Mary Gilliland will act as Secretary Pro Tem.

Respectfully submitted

Mark Jones, Professor

Dept. of Criminal Justice

FGC Secretary
