COMMITTEE: Faculty Welfare
MEETING DATE: October 12, 2006
PERSON PRESIDING: D.
REGULAR MEMBERS IN ATTENDANCE: A. Dralle,
EX-OFFICIO MEMBERS IN ATTENDANCE: E. Stellwag
OTHERS IN ATTENDANCE: M. Lysaght, A. Metcalf-Woodard, D. Muller
ACTIONS OF MEETING:
Agenda Item: Approval of minutes
Action Taken: Dralle /Salstrom motioned approval of the minutes of September 14, 2006 meeting. Motion passed.
Agenda Item: Faculty Dining
Discussion: Lysaght and Metcalf-Woodard reviewed dining service recommendations based on recent ARAMARK MarketMATCH survey data. Welfare Committee requested data to assist with consideration of a faculty dining room addition at the Croatan. ARAMARK will present a survey for review by the committee. Welfare will send out the finalized survey to all faculty via the Senate office. Reliance on student fees to fund a faculty dining room is problematic.
Additional Assigned Duties:
Agenda Item: New Faculty Orientation
Discussion: D. Muller reviewed the evolution of the New Faculty Orientation Program which now includes fixed-term as well as probationary faculty. Evaluative comments from participants indicate a need to establish a mechanism for faculty networking and mentoring outside the home units. This will be one objective as the Center for Faculty Development becomes the Center for Faculty Excellence and incorporates the New Faculty Orientation Program late fall semester. The process for identifying mentors and recognizing this type of service has not been established.
Assigned Additional Duties: All committee members are asked to provide feedback on the New Faculty Orientation Blackboard web site and provide suggestions for recruitment and recognition of mentors.
Agenda Item: Supplemental Pay Policy
Discussion: The UNC Administrative Memo #407.G.4.c identified under ‘Overloads’ has been replaced by #400.1.1.1(R). G.4.c (Dec. 12, 2000) entitled ‘Regulation for Planning and Conducting Degree-Related Extension and Distance Education’. Memo # 400 limits faculty to one DE course per semester as an overload thereby allowing two DE course as overload per year. This contradicts the stated ECU Policy limiting overload compensation for any purpose to one per year. Further clarification and discussion is needed. Specifying a process to handle exceptions is also needed.
The meeting adjourned at 5:10.
NEXT MEETING: November 9, 2006
ITEMS TO BE DISCUSSED:
Supplemental Pay Policy
Faculty Dining Survey draft
New Faculty Orientation feedback
Respectfully submitted,
Susan A. McGhee
