ACTIONS OF MEETING: Election of Officers for 2007-08

Salman Abdulali was elected chair; Tom Douglass was elected vice-chair, and Patrick Valentine was elected secretary.

Agenda Item: Libraries Committee goals for 2007/08

Discussion:  Taggart called for election of officers. Abdulali explained charge of committee and led a discussion of the Libraries Committee membership and responsibilities as outlined in the committee charge.  One of the principal goals of the committee is to serve as a channel of communication between the libraries and the faculty.

Abdulali asked how the committee might facilitate the goals of the library.

Cable, Coghill and Winstead discussed various aspects of library operations and asked Taggart to announce and demonstrate digital archives to the faculty.  They noted a schedule conflict for Spencer and Boyer and the committee suggested meeting at 3:30 instead of 3:00 to accommodate them. Douglas suggested putting off discussing committee goals until Spencer and Boyer can attend.  Taggart would look into schedule conflict.

Coghill noted that the Carolina Consortium is lining up more deals for expanding electronic resources, but that e-books connectivity through NetLibrary is not very good. Cable pointed out that the Laupus is 80% journals and only 20% monographs and books.  Winstead and Coghill reported that both libraries have overflowing crowds of students, especially at night.  Joyner is sponsoring student gaming on Friday nights and converting space so students have more study rooms with e-resources.  Concern was expressed not to discard too much.  Both libraries are purchasing e-resources to replace microfilm.  Joyner underwent an administrative re-organization this summer and is open more hours, such as during holidays.  Winstead expressed hope that roof repairs would be completed by October.

The meeting was adjourned at 4:00 p.m.

NEXT MEETING:  3:30 p.m., October 17, 2007, at the Faculty Senate Conference Room in Rawl Annex.

ITEMS TO BE DISCUSSED:

Abdulali requested that the committee look at library policies, especially faculty input in collection development, and continue its discussion of Libraries Committee goals at the next meeting.

Respectfully submitted,

Patrick Valentine
