Reports Heard:
David Dosser (FAR) :
- Discussed
concerns regarding mental health services available to student
athletes. This concern was
supported by SAAC officer, Jarret Newby. Commonly reported problems among student
athletes nationally include depression, anxiety and eating disorders. Dr. Dosser suggested that personnel from
the campus counseling center, office of the dean of students and sports
medicine be invited to speak to the committee regarding this issue.
- Raised
concerns regarding the availability of majors for student athletes. This is general concern of the student
body as whole with students with GPA’s in the 2.0-2.5 being eligible to
continue at the university but having few major options. The chair will schedule a representative
from Academic Affairs to address this issue.
Gary Overton
(Athletics):
- Reported
that the design presentations for the new softball stadium were occurring
as he spoke.
- Stated
that the new “PeeDee” mascot had met with mixed
reviews. There would be
modifications forthcoming.
- Reported
the women’s soccer team won the CUSA regular season title compiling a
15-4-4 record. Coach Donnenwirth was named conference “Coach of the Year”,
three players were on the all-conference team and two were named to the
all-academic team. Despite these
accomplishments the team did not receive an NCAA tournament berth.
Michael Felts (Chair)
- Reported
that he, Rosie Thompson and Nick Floyd had participated in a meeting with
external reviewers of the University’s EEO office. One suggesting emerging from that
meeting was that all student-athletes receive Title IX training and that
this training be documented.
Meeting adjourned at
4:30 pm.
Respectfully Submitted,
Michael Felts
