Actions of Meeting

Agenda Item:             Introduction

Action Taken:            Mike Felts noted that the report on Title IX by Nick Floyd will be delayed until the next meeting.

Agenda Item: Report from David Dosser

Action Taken              David reported on the Knight Commission findings.  The Knight Commission presented an online presentation of the faculty summit findings.  This webcast can be found at www.knightcommission.org. A discussion of ECU faculty impressions of athletics followed David’s findings and the general consensus appeared to be that faculty are generally concerned about the welfare of their individual student-athletes, but leaves the administration of the athletic department to the AD.  David also provided the committee with his report to the faculty senate and a News and Observer article depicting their impression of the state of affairs of campus athletics.

Agenda Item:             Report of Athletics Director

Action Taken:            Terry Holland provided a general update on the athletic teams.  He noted that they were expecting a large crowd with N.C. State game on campus this weekend.  He reiterated that the programs are moving in a positive direction and academics continue to be at the forefront of the athletic department’s goals.  He updated the committee on the retirement of Coach Carson and said that the NCAA violations were not major and did not create a competitive advantage, but were administrative details that were just overlooked.

Agenda Item:             Laptop availability

Action Taken:            Nita Boyce presented the committee with data concerning availability of laptops for student athletes to check when on the road.  Currently, of the 429 student/athletes, 320 have personal laptops.  The athletic department has 55 available to be checked out by the other 109 students.  Laptop availability does not appear to be a problem

Agenda Item:             The Pork Barrel

Action Taken:            Bradley Congleton with the SGA discussed that the SGAs from both State and ECU have gotten together to award a pork barrel to the winning team each year.  The pork barrel will be filled with donations each year for a noted charity and will also be presented every year the teams play.
