Committee Actions:
Approval of October minutes.
Reports Heard:
Colleen Estes
- Discussed
upcoming Thanksgiving food drive, 11/16/09.
Terry Holland:
- ECU
did not qualify for basketball or volleyball championships, teams had many
injuries.
- Football:
if we win one of next two games we’ll most likely win Eastern Division.
Next game Sunday night at Tulsa.
- Plan
is to have all three pieces of construction in place by 2012 season.
- Lots
of compliments to ECU for the way we handled the game with Virginia Tech
last week.
- Article
in USA today 11/10 about coaches and assistant coaches. Mentioned that
some of ours are paid incentives to offset public relations
responsibilities and extraneous day to day work that goes above and beyond
and that increase revenue streams.
David Dosser:
- Professional
sports counseling panel update.
- Academic
Cabinet member, discussed NCAA core-course review policies and procedures
document.
- Discussed
trends in online high schools becoming more like diploma mills than actual
schools. They generate money and give students diplomas but not an actual
education.
- This
committee must closely examine and ensure that all ECU students are held
to high academic standards and are prepared to meet the requirements of
ECU for collegiate education.
- We
also keep tabs on students coming from dubious educational backgrounds
even when NCAA eligibility is established through the clearinghouse.
General Discussion:
- Discussion
about the importance of high expectations of our students and our
obligation to provide a quality education to student athletes.
Other updates and new
business.
Nita Boyce:
- 2009
graduation rate and GSR report.
Mike Felts:
- Special
talent waivers data will not be posted anywhere but will be shared with
members of the Academic Integrity Subcommittee in January. Will look at new and historical data on
graduation success rate (GSR). The Chancellor’s Committee will meet to
discuss nonqualifiers after fall semester.
