ACTIONS OF MEETING

Agenda Item: Approval of minutes

Discussion: Approved as written.

Action Taken: Approved minutes.

Agenda Item: Report from David Dosser. Received IRB approval to administer NCAA National Study of Substance Use Habits of College Student Athletes Survey to mens' and womens' track teams in the next few weeks. Data are not disaggregated by school. This survey has been administered over several years to examine student athletes' use of tobacco, gambling, and alcohol.

Discussion: Data are not disaggregated by university so as to avoid any possible means of identifying individual teams or students. Discussion about using this survey with all student athletes on campus in the future.

Gary Overton & Terry Holland discussed the upcoming conversion of the Pat Draughn conference room into a dedicated academic counseling area, complete with offices, study carrels, academic counseling, and opportunities for tutorials. This will commence at the end of this semester with funding from the athletics budget and donors.

Olympic Sports Complex will also be started soon. New volleyball coach Patty Rolf named and beginning ASAP. Ms. Rolf is also a certified official and has a variety of professional experience.

Agenda Item: In response to questions about funding: all coaches have been asked to budget a 15% across the board crisis cut, without furloughs included. Athletic funding is dependent on the donor health of the university and athletic base. Since we do not know how things stand right now, we will have to adopt a wait-and-see attitude, and then beginning making cuts and adjustments in May.

Discussion: Action Taken: N/A

Agenda Item: Academic Excellence Awards Banquet was held this month. To be honored student athletes had to have a GPA of 3.5 or higher, and were invited to bring along one influential faculty member. In 2003-04, there were 35 honorees, this year the figure rose to 55. All UAC members are invited to attend and to share with other colleagues the excellent work of our student athletes.

The annual PCS Phosphate Breakfast of Champions will be held Saturday, May 2, 2009 at Harvey Hall. Invitations are forthcoming to all UAC members. This is our all-academic team, and will celebrate our

Athletics is anticipating at least a 10% reduction in fund raising and ticket sales, which could negatively impact out-of-state tuition waivers for athletics scholarships, which are funded by athletics, not by the university. The 18% cap on out-of-state students is not affected by these athletes, as they take the place of in-state students, leaving the entire 18% available for other students (non-athletes).

Discussion: Because of how this is funded, there is no reason for it to become the target of budget-cutting. Also, Athletics needs to maintain a balanced budget, as we cannot yet know how severely outstanding male and female athletes.

Student exit-interviews are required by the NCAA as part of institutional control, and as a form of evaluation regarding students who are graduating and those who have exhausted eligibility. These will be held the last day of final exams, May 7, 2009, and cover all aspects of the student's experience here.

Action Taken: Mark on calendar

Assigned additional duties to: Nita Boyce will email UAC members to invite them to participate in this interview process.

David Dosser and the Student Athletic Council (SAC) continuing the Student Athlete Survey, designed to elicit ongoing, anonymous data and make changes accordingly. Survey was adapted from Central Florida University and will be to open to students the last couple of weeks in the semester and available via invitation from coordinators. Once collected, we will be able to disaggregate by team and by gender.
