Committee Actions:
Approval of February minutes. No meeting in March due to no new business to
conduct.
Reports Heard:
David Dosser:
- Discussion about
Chronicle article about special admits, major clustering, cheating, and
learning problems among student athletes. Admitting students who cannot do
the work puts pressure on everyone and sets the student up for failure,
and apart from all other students. Conclusion: important work must be done
to ensure athletes do not exist at cost to others and that university
committees (like this one) must ensure compliance with rules. Discussion
followed.
Nita Boyce:
- 7th Annual
Academic Excellence Awards Banquet held, with over 60 student athletes
recognized for GPA above 3.5, and 29 faculty guests in attendance.
- Student athletes are
now showing they value academics highly and are getting good internships
and graduate school placements.
Nick Floyd:
- Football stadium
expansion is on schedule or ahead of schedule. Fan base is excited and
season ticket sales are ahead already as well. Additional teams are coming
to play in
Greenville next year.
- Student participation
in naming contest has been good.
- Removed some benches
from stadium and added chair-backed-seats. This reduces number of seats by
500, but increases revenues.
- All this years home
games had attendance above capacity.
- Olympic sports venues,
soccer fields, and stadium are going up already, and got started with
student fees. New projected completion date is 12/2011, with help of 25-year
bonds going to market next year for 23.5M of “cheap money.”
- Fundraising is in
progress for men’s and women’s basketball practice facility. $3-4 M is
already collected; need about $12 M total. Discussion followed.
Meeting adjourned at 4:30
pm. Next meeting to be scheduled in fall 2010.
NOTE:
The Academic Integrity Subcommittee met in closed session to discuss academic
integrity and compliance issues. Adjourned at 5:30 pm.

Submitted,
