-          An overview of the recent steps that were taken to re-organize the Division of Research and Graduate Studies; and

-          A summary of the totals and funding sources of the Division. The Division shares only 7% or the state operating funds.

Vice Chancellor Mageean provided a flow chart to show the relations between the administration of the Division and subunits, centers/institutes, Graduate School, and Economic Development Center.

Because the Division spans both campuses the committee asked questions about the possibility of streamlining the organization of the division to facilitate collaboration between units. In response to other questions, Mageean explained that assistantship funds should be used to give students opportunities to teach or conduct research. The committee asked questions about the availability of state tuition waivers and how rates for revenue agreements were determined.

Agenda Item: Michael Dowdy, Vice Chancellor of University Advancement, provided a presentation about the University Advancement Division that included a structural overview and goals of the division. The division supports the ECU strategic plan through University Development by way of the Second Century Campaign; University Marking through branding, positioning and publications; and Alumni Programs. The presentation included budget details about how the Division is supported from state funds, university foundations, and the Alumni Association.  The committee noted that recent university marketing and publications has been effective in presenting a positive public image in the broader community, and the ECU Second Century Campaign has a good start.
