COMMITTEE: Admissions and Recruitment MEETING DATE: August 28, 1995 PERSON PRESIDING: John Cope ACTIONS OF MEETING Description of action: Opening remarks by Sexauer. Sexauer urges us to do our research on issues and to lobby the faculty senate members prior to requesting faculty senate action. Description of action: Introduction of members. Welcoming comments by Yarbrough. Description of action: Election of new officers: Cope (chair), Bergstrom (vice chair), Clark (secretary) Description of action: The committee discussed a special priority item brought forward by Patricia Anderson (past chair of the faculty) regarding a request to review the Freshman Admission Policy regarding the age required for admission. The current policy requires a student to be at least 16 years old. During the discussion, Sykes clarified the policy which requires "three outside sources" (SAT profile, recommendation from the High School principal, and a recommendation from the subject matter faculty). Cope mentioned that the catalogue needs to be revised. The committee voted to approve a change in policy as reflected by eliminating item #1, page 29 in the catalogue section referring to ADMISSION: FRESHMEN. Thus the specific age requirement is eliminated. One benefit of the change in policy: enhanced recruitment Follow-up action required: This revised policy will come before the Agenda committee (meeting 8/29) to be included in the Faculty Senate meeting agenda for Sept. 12. Cope will prepare a report to present and Yarbrough and Sykes will defend/clarify as needed. Description of action: Discussion of Old Business: 1. Consideration of the confidentiality of appeals and the development of standard procedures to maximize student privacy issues. Action: The committee decided to follow the procedures established by the Readmission Appeals Committee. 2. Discussion and recap of committee charges and responsibilities. Action: We hear first time appeals, thus our charge is clear. 3. Clarification of committee stance on Graduate School admissions. Action: We need to do some research before becoming involved in shaping the Graduate School policy. Description of action: Setting goals for '95/96. 1. Sykes mentioned that we will need to make editorial changes to the catalogue information on Nontraditional students. The policy stipulates that Non-traditional students are defined as 24 years or older. Sykes informed us that this will result in approximately 150 fewer students next year. 2. Mead urged us to take a "pro-active" stance towards policy setting. Rather than be "reactive," we become more involved in setting policies. 3. We will check the confidentiality procedures currently in place with the Readmission Appeals Committee, This meeting adjourned at 2:50 p.m. Submitted by Dawn Clark, Secretary
