COMMITTEE: Admissions and Recruitment MEETING DATE: 11/3/97 PERSON PRESIDING: John Cope ACTIONS OF MEETING: Description of action: John Cope noted the lack of a quorum and said that we would do what we could before adjourning. Description of action: Minutes of 8/25/97 approved. Description of action: Cope asked Powell to report on the breakdown of the Freshman class. Powell said that his report is in the Faculty Senate minutes of Oct. 14, but he summarized the important points. Freshman enrollment is 2,934, the largest that it's ever been at East Carolina; the average combined SAT is 1015; and the average high school GPA is 3.209. Although the SAT is stagnant from last year's score, it is still very high, considering that we have a larger class this year. This is the best Freshman class at ECU, based on average high school GPA and SAT scores. Discussion continued on the proportion of out of state students and the 18% cap mandated by the General Administration, as well as the potential difficulty of competing for students with other universities when we attain Doctoral II status and tuition fees increase. Description of action: Cope noted that Memorandum no. 373, which pertains to distance learning, is actually no. 372, which we will discuss at the next meeting. NEXT MEETING: December 1, 1997 3:00 p.m. ITEMS TO BE DISCUSSED: Board of Governors' activities in relation to transfer of credit between institutions. UNC Administrative Memorandum no. 372, pertaining to distance learning courses. Michael Cotter, Secretary
