COMMITTEE: Admissions and Recruitment MEETING DATE: February 1, 1999 PERSON PRESlDING: John Cope ACTlONS OF MEETING: The Admissions and Recruitment Committee met at the International Program House on February 1, 1999. The meeting included the following items of business: I . The minutes of the December 7, 1998 meeting were approved. 2. A letter written by J. Cope has been forwarded to the Committee on Committees, requesting representation from the Office of International Affairs on the Admissions and Recruitment Committee 3. The most recent draft of the resolution related to the recruitment of international students was reviewed. The purpose of this meeting was to obtain input from personnel in the Office of International Affairs and from committee members. Following the discussion of this meeting, an updated draft will be written and forwarded to committee members. 4. J. Van Fleet and M. McDiarmid responded to the draft resolution and presented information associated with the needs of the Office of International Affairs and with their programs for international students: A. They expressed their appreciation for the advocacy as reflected by the efforts of the Admissions and Recruitment Committee to encourage the institution to promote recruitment of international students and to address issues confronting this population. B. It was noted that presently, international students at ECU represent 59 countries. However there is a need to increase representation from other countries and areas, as well, e.g., Asia, Africa, Latin America. C. There is a need for provisions for intensive language training and language assistance for international students. There was discussion related to intensive language programs of the past and the need for these programs for the present and future. D. Ideally, it would be beneficial for ECU to have a free- standing and self-supporting center for language and culture, e.g., "American Language and Culture Institute" to provide intensive language training, survival techniques for international students, etc. Funds and physical space would be needed for this type of center. E. M. McDiarmid distributed a sheet identifying needs associated with the work of the Office of International Affairs. F. It was noted that there is a need for increased marketing of the programs and opportunities for international students, e.g., printed material, information on Internet, brochures, posters, etc. G. There is a need to increase the ECU campus readiness and involvement in the process associated with the recruitment of international students. H. There is a need for increased funding and personnel for the Office of International Affairs. 5. It was noted that the role of this committee is to generate awareness and encourage dialogue related to the recruitment of international students. 6.
