The recommendation of the Committee was accepted by the Faculty Senate and approved by the Chancellor, but subsequently voided by a new state law. Tom Powell reported that a UNC System teleconference is scheduled for September 24 to discuss practices at the various schools. ECU will attempt to have its admissions policy use the ACT exam, but in view of the small population of home-schooled students applying to ECU, it will take several years to establish minimum standards. --Summer Scholars Institute. Approved by the Faculty Senate and by the Chancellor. Cope asked the status of the program now and what office has responsibility for it. The information needs to get out to the high schools and guidance counselors now for next year. Follow-up action required: Caroline Ayers said that she would ask in Academic Affairs what is being done about it. --Transfer of credit between institutions. Cope had received copies of two documents distributed at the November 1996 Faculty Assembly meeting. Don Sexauer reported that this committee should review them and determine whether the topic was within its charge. Follow-up action required: J. Cope will distribute copies to committee members. --SACS criteria for courses offered in non-traditional formats. Sexauer stated that the chancellor has established a distance education committee, chaired by Dave Watkins; we should contact them to see that the two committees are not working at cross purposes. Carrafiello reported that the Admissions and Recruitment Committee just touched on it last spring and has not considered it further. Sexauer said that the latest memo from General Administration on distance education is not as open as in the past. Follow-up action required: To be discussed at November meeting. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Description of action: Admission of international students. Muller asked what committee should be concerned with it. Gulati thought that it should be this committee and that a representative from International Programs should be invited to attend committee meetings, as he had suggested last year. Follow-up action required: Added to agenda to discuss this year. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Description of action: Lack of students accepting Chancellor's Scholarships and University Scholarships. Lowe was concerned that in the past 2-3 years, few students have accepted the scholarships and that we need to improve the offers. Powell stated that the dollar value of the scholarships has not increased with the cost of living and is not as much as some other institutions, especially UNC, Duke, and Wake Forest, offer. A campaign is underway to increase the amount of the awards. NEXT MEETING: November 3, 1997 3:00 p.m. ITEMS TO BE DISCUSSED: --Transfer of credit between institutions. --SACS criteria for courses offered in non-traditional formats. Michael Cotter, Secretary
