COMMITTEE: Writing Across the Curriculum MEETING DATE: January 26, 1995 PERSON PRESIDING: Nancy Zeller, Chair ACTIONS OF MEETING: Description of action: Minutes Approved Chair requested that the order of the agenda be altered and we move directly to approval of course proposals. Description of action: Approval of WI course proposals. N4320 Community and Mental Heath Nursing Discussion: the committee found there to be some inconsistencies between the course syllabus and the proposal submitted. Specifically: number of pages required goals for WI experience "Short Position Paper" in proposal but not in syllabus Moved (Gordon/Schmidt) that the proposal be rewritten to clarify the inconsistencies. Motion carried Assigned additional duties to: Rita Reaves- Remind department that WI requirement is 3 s.h. (above course (2 s.h.) is the only one in nursing as of this date) OCCT 4041 Occupational Therapy Intervention III Discussion: Proposal much clearer. Moved to Approve (Wittman/Stephenson) Motion--Carried Description of action: WAC Directors Report Memo to Department Chairs, reminding them that transfer students are effected by the WI requirement beginning F95. Discussion by the committee concluded that the memo with a few editorial changes would probably have a better effect if it was sent from the VCAA's office. Special Note: Extensive discussion centered around the interpretation of the WI requirement (as stated in the General Requirements for Graduation) by not only the committee but department heads as well as the office of admissions when processing the senior summary and/or transfer documents. Specifically, the interpretation of the additional amount of courses required beyond ENGL 1100 and 1200 was discussed. The current requirement reads "At least one 3 s.h. Wl course in the major; and any other 3 s.h. WI course of the student's choice." The principal question raised by the committee was: Do 1 s.h. and 2 s.h. courses count toward the Wl graduation requirement? Presently, the committee is accepting proposals for 1 s.h. and 2 s.h. courses. Assigned additional duties to: Rita Reaves-Please find answers to the above questions and report back to the committee at the next meeting. Rita informed the committee that she was meeting with Dr. Yarbrough regarding possible funding for a seminar for WAC instructors to be held Wednesday, February 22 from 12-2. Panel discussions with the following possible topics would be held: Ways to provide feedback to students. Effects writing has had in your department as well as your courses. Ways to survive a Wl course. Discussion: Add a survey at the end. Panel discussion format a good idea. Possibly as a reward system, hold a biannual reception for WAC instructors (funded by the VCAA), on or even off campus. Assigned additional duties to: Rita Reaves-Report back to the committee at the next meeting.
