COMMITTEE: Writing Across the Curriculum MEETING DATE: December 14, 1995 PERSON PRESIDING: Chris Ulffers ACTIONS OF MEETING: Description of action: Dr. Dorothy Muller, Dean of Undergraduate Studies, was present to discuss with the Committee the current lack of official policy regarding granting Writing Intensive semester hours to students working on a second baccalaureate degree, and to transfer students or students coming to East Carolina University with CLEP and/or AP credit. Completion date/ Follow-up action required: Dr. Muller plans to return in January for further discussion and possible action on these issues. Description of action: Dr. Peggy Wood, Chair of the Department of Health Information Management was present to discuss the two course proposals of her department. Completion date/ Follow-up action required: None Description of action: The Committee approved the following courses as WI intensive: HIMA 3025 (contingent on extending the length of the research paper to a minimum of 15 pages and on including in the course description the essay requirement of the examinations) HIMA 4025 Completion date/ Follow-up required: None Description of action: Dr. Susan T. Smith, Chair of the Department of Clinical Laboratory Science was present to discuss with the committee the Department's request that CLSC 4300 and either CLSC 4302 or CLSC 4665 be considered as a combination of two courses to satisfy the 3 semester hour writing intensive requirement in the major. The Committee approved this request. CLSC 4300 (3 s.h.) will be designated as writing intensive with the provision that the 3 s.h. writing intensive credit will not be earned until successful completion of either CLSC 4302 (2 s.h.) or CLSC 4665 (2 s.h.). The latter courses will not be designated as writing intensive. Completion date/ Follow-up required: None Description of action: DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Rita presented a first draft of a notebook " Writing Across the Curriculum Program: Ideas for Teaching Writing Intensive Courses' for the Committee's review and comments before issuing the final draft to all writing intensive instructors and department heads. The notebook will be used both as a guideline for developing writing intensive courses and as a source-book for writing intensive instructors. Rita plans to issue a memo to clarify the four different models of guidelines for writing intensive courses. Rita reported that the seminar held in December was a success and that she is planning two follow-up seminars in Spring. Rita plans to meet with the chair and WI instructors of each department in the Spring to discuss relevant to WI courses Rita announced that the Program Office will be moving over the holidays to Ragsdale l18. Rita passed out WI course proposals for courses in ANTH and ECON for January's meeting.
