COMMITTEE: Writing Across the Curriculum MEETING DATE: February 23, 1995 PERSON PRESIDING: Mary Schmidt, Vice-Chair DESCRIPTION OF ACTION: Minutes approved as read. WAC Directors Report: 1. Meeting with Dr. Yarbrough: The transfer memo was supported and been distributed (see 1/26 minutes) Funding for a WAC seminar was supported (This included $ for refreshments.) A final date is still uncertain but the last week in March is a possibility. Suggestions from Dr. Yarbrough were: Department Chairs be invited, and the event be moved to a larger venue, i.e.. Mendenhall Great Room. 2. Meeting with Bobbie Austin - Referred to Dorothy Muller. 3. Meeting with Dorothy Muller- recommended that this committee modify the language in Undergraduate catalog. Discussion centered around: l)how the committee is to interpret the "writing intensiveness of courses that count for l, 2, 3, 4, or 5 semester hours and 2) how the catalog wording should be altered to be clearer. It was finally determined that only a clarification in the wording of the Wl requirement was necessary to properly interpret it by this committee and the office of the registrar and avoid any confusion across campus. Description of action: Motion: Revise page 52, Section 5: General Requirements for Graduation, to read the following: .... To do so, each student must complete a minimum of 12 s.h. of writing intensive courses, including ENGL 1100, 1200; at least 3 s.h. of writing intensive courses in the major; and any other writing intensive course(s) of the student's choice.... (Poe/Gordon) Motion carried unanimously It was the consensus of the committee that this was an editorial change only, therefore Senate approval was not necessary. Assigned additional duties to: Reaves - Submit catalog revision to Caroline Ayers to be included in the revised catalog. 4. Meeting with Emilie Kane in the Office of Sponsored Programs re: grants for WAC program - Several suggestions were made: (1) Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation and (2) team up with other in the NC system for other grants. Scavo made the suggestion that perhaps the Southern Regional Education Board could be a source for grant money. 5. Dr. Reaves asked if there would be support from this committee for a WAC email listing. Discussion: There was unanimous support for an email listing. Dr. Gordon agreed to serve as "list administrator" Perhaps this idea could be expanded into a help line through the writing center and be staffed by a graduate student. The idea will be taken up at a later meeting after some initial groundwork is in place. Approval of Wl course proposals. COMM 2200 Basic Reporting, COMM 3210 Advanced Reporting, COMM 3221 Investigative Reporting, and EHLT 4200 Environmental Health Management and Law. POLS 4000 Political Leadership was not approved - members of the committee questioned the amount of writing in the course.
