COMMITTEE: Writing Across the Curriculum MEETING DATE: February 22, 1996 PERSON PRESIDING: Chris Ulffers ACTIONS OF MEETING: Description of action: Minutes of the January 25, 1996 meeting were approved as amended: Spanish 3216, not 3206, was approved as writing intensive. Completion date/ Follow-up action required: None Description of action: Jerry Clayton and Dot Muller were present to address the Committee's concerns about writing intensive requirements for transfer and second degree students. After much discussion, the committee approved the following motion: "All second degree students will be required to complete at least 3 hours of writing intensive coursework in the major." Discussion about requirements for transfer students focused on the lack of consistency in documenting writing intensive courses in catalogs and on transcripts. Therefore the ECU Admissions office needs guidelines for doing so when evaluating transfer students. The committee voted to leave requirements for transfer students as stated in the Writing Across the Curriculum Handbook. Completion date/ Follow-up action required: Rita will assume responsibility for developing a computer-compatible form for use with courses not designated on the transcript or listed in a transfer student's catalog which could be used for the consideration of a student request to transfer a course as writing intensive. Descriptions of action: DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Rita is continuing to gather program effectiveness data. She asked for feedback and comments about the content of the WAC Handbook before it is reprinted. Completion date/ Follow-up action required: None Description of action: The Committee discussed d the following courses: Nursing 3900, Econ 3750. Although the committee was impressed with information given about ECON 3750 from the course instructor and commends her for her efforts, the course proposal does not meet the criteria outlined in the WAC Handbook and it was therefore not accepted as writing intensive. Completion/ Follow-up action required: Nursing 3900 was tabled until Rita can clarify the specific amount of writing required for course assignments. Communications 3010 was tabled until the next meeting. NEXT MEETINGS: Thursday, March 28th and April 25th ITEMS TO BE DISCUSSED: 1. New course proposals 2. Other committee business (on-going review system and program assessment)
