COMMITTEE: Writing Across the Curriculum MEETING DATE: April 25, 1996 PERSON PRESIDING: Chris Ulffers ACTIONS OF MEETING: Description of action: Minutes of the March 28, 1996 meeting were approved. Description of action: Gene Owens from Undergraduate Studies was present to address the Committee's concerns about writing intensive requirements for transfer students. After much discussion, the committee agreed to rescind a section of the guidelines approved at last month's meeting due to unforeseen complications with processing requests from transfer students for courses taken in other places to be approved as WI. The following motion was then approved: "A student who has satisfied East Carolina University's freshmen composition requirements upon transfer, will have met the writing intensive requirement equivalents to English 1100 and English 1200." Completion date/ Follow-up action required: Rita will assume responsibility for editing the Guidelines for Evaluating W-I Credit for Transfer Students. The first two items will remain as previously written and items number 3 and 4 will be omitted. This policy statement will be sent to University administrators and to the Office of Undergraduate Studies. Descriptions of action: DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Rita reported that she appreciates very much the fact that thank you letters were sent to all WI instructors from Vice Chancellor Yarbrough. The new edition of the Academic Planner now includes the WI program requirements. A notebook with ideas for teaching WI courses will now be available through University Publications and 300 will be printed for new (and old if desired!) WI course instructors to use as a reference. Rita continues to gather program effectiveness data; she has received 34 surveys and will be analyzing the results this summer. These results will be distributed to all WI instructors and the WAC Committee next fall. She asked for feedback and comments about the content of the WAC Handbook before it is reprinted and the Committee made several suggestions: (1) Clarify the specific number of pages required and how multiple drafts will be used on the form since this has often been unclear on applications received this year (2) Emphasize the page requirements needed throughout the document (3) Restate the requirements for graduation as discussed by the Committee this past year.. Description of action: The Committee discussed d the following course: AMID 2700.. EXSS 4806 was tabled until clarification about the type and number of writing assignments required is received. Communications 3010 was tabled until the next meeting. Description of action: The Committee discussed progress on Committee goals for this year and those which should be continued next year.
