COMMITEE: Writing Across the Curriculum MEETING DATE: 28 September 1995 PERSON PRESIDING: Chris Ulffers ACTIONS OF MEETING Description of action: Rita reported that she is concerned about on-going assessment for courses designated as writing intensive. Several alternative methods are available for doing so including a re-application process to the WAC Committee, school-based review, or administrative review. Completion date/ Follow-up action required: The Committee decided that the development of a review system would be a goal for this year. Further discussion will be necessary in order to decide on how such a system might work. Description of action: Rita stated that she hopes to interview writing intensive course instructors in order to gather data regarding course and WAC program outcomes. Committee members agreed that gathering outcome data is very important but questioned how this might be done most effectively and efficiently. Completion date/ Follow-up action required: Design methodology for program assessment will be discussed and implemented by the WAC Committee this year. Description of action: Rita noted that she is interested in determining how technology can be used to assist writing intensive course instructors be more efficient. Jim Kirkland commented that he views the individualized tutoring relationship between tutors and students now present in the Writing Center as important. A discussion group for anyone interested in sharing ideas about writing issues will soon be available electronically. Completion/ Follow-up action required: The Committee will continue to monitor technology for use as appropriate. Descriptions of action: Several faculty training sessions will be held this year targeted toward new faculty, those in related disciplines and professional schools, and all writing intensive course instructors. Notebooks with examples of writing assignments which Rita is compiling will be distributed to participants. Completion date/ Follow-up action required: Dates and further information about these training sessions will be announced at a later time. Description of action: Rita has requested a list of all transfer students from the Registrar in order to determine how many have taken writing intensive courses. She has also received 11 new course proposals for approval. Completion data/Follow-up action required: Three course proposals will be sent to each committee member to review thoroughly for discussion at the next meeting. NEXT MEETING: Thursday October 12, 1995 at 3:00. The Committee will also meet on November 9, 1995, and December 14, 1995 because of ECU holidays this semester which fall on its regularly scheduled 4th Thursday of each month.
