COMMITTEE: Writing Across the Curriculum MEETING DATE: January 23,1997 PERSON PRESIDING: Chris Ulffers ACTIONS OF MEETING: Description of action: Director's Report Item: Rita began the meeting with the Director's Report. The first students affected by WI requirement are now graduating. This also includes transfer .students as of Fall of 1995. Description of action: Transfer of courses designated as WI Item: Rita will meet with administrators representing the Registrar's office, Admissions, and the Undergraduate School next Tuesday (1/28/97) regarding problems and concerns involving consideration of transfer of WI courses into our institution. Rita will report back to the WAC Committee at the next meeting. Item: Rita introduced Marion P. Sykes, Jr., Senior Director of Admissions. Dr. Sykes shared information regarding the number of transfer students (refer to memo dated 1/22/97) and the increasing difficulty in determining WI credit of transfer courses. Dr. Sykes also discussed the Degree Audit Reporting System which all students will be included in within two years. Dr. Sykes continued that there is a need to develop a procedure for transfer of WI courses into our institution. Item: Dr. Sykes offered further insight (refer to memo dated January 22,1997) regarding transfer of WI designated courses and possible suggestions for consideration. Item: Committee members expressed the following concerns, questions, and ideas: * Would it be possible for the N.C. Community College system to designate WI with a common number? * Would it be possible for the community college to follow ECU guidelines and designate WI courses? * Would it be possible to adopt general guidelines which would meet the UNC system? * Perhaps the WAC Committee might review appeals * Concern expressed regarding the number of appeals * Clarification regarding the review process: perhaps the WAC Committee could review the proposals for WI not the appeals * Committee reviewed memo of 9/25/96 regarding UNC and UNC Community College systems. * Would it be possible for the community college to forward a syllabus for review? Dr. Sykes replied that he felt the community colleges would be happy to comply with this request. * Concern expressed regarding the number of syllabi which might be received * Question regarding indication of certification of WI on transcript or in the catalog - Reply - No. This is too difficult a process at this time. * Rita provided the committee with a copy of the Florida Gordon Rule regarding WI requirements * Suggestion that community college devise a WI program and ECU might offer assistance through existing model Completion date/Follow-up action required 1. Rita will report back to the WAC Committee after she has attended the meeting scheduled for 1/28/97. At this time, she will present more detailed information regarding the transfer of WI courses. Description of Action: Consideration of proposal - Small Business Management 4262 for designation as WI. Item: Steve Childers, Director ECU-SBI was present to submit further documentation (see memo dated December 11, 1996) and explanation regarding Small Business Management 4262. The Committee was asked to refer to the minutes of the December 5, 1996 meeting to review concerns expressed regarding the original proposal * Documentative materials and explanations were offered which met each of the concerns * The suggestion was made that the syllabus and the peer review form be amended (see memo and attachments 12/11) to indicate WI activity Completion date/Follow-up action required: The motion was carried that Small Business Management 4262 be designated as WI upon the amendment of syllabus and peer review form to indicate such activity. Description of action: Correction of December 5, 1996 minutes. Mike McCameron corrected to Mike McCammon. The minutes of the December 5th meeting were approved with this correction. Description of action: Chris provided the members of the committee with information regarding "Open Meetings Compliance," (see attachment 1), "Motion to go Into Closed Session" (see attachment 2), and "Language of Motion for Closed Session..." Description of action: Request for WI approval for MKTG 4992 *Rita provided the members with a Writing Intensive Course Proposal and syllabus from Dr. Robert Frankel for MKTG 4992. *Review and discussion of the documentation followed. Item: Motion carried and request approved Description of action: Continued discussion of Professor Bailey's comments Item: Rita asked the members to review the memo dated 9/18/96 Item: The members discussed the following concerns: *impact WI designation has on student enrollment in selected courses *impact WI designation has on FTE *the need to collect more data regarding the above two issues Completion date/Follow-up action required: *Rita will investigate the possibility of the Office of the Registrar providing the Committee with data regarding the course number, whether it is a required course and how enrollment has changed.
