Writing Across the Curriculum Meeting Date: January 28, 1999 Person Presiding: Lynn Eudey ACTIONS OF MEETING Description of action: Rita reminded the Committee that the following courses were approved as WI via e-mail vote (results- November 19, 1998): ART 4920; GEOG 3050; ENGL 3640. Description of action: Item: Motion made to pass minutes from the October 22, 1998 meeting. Description of action: Discussion of MUSC 5616 - "History of Vocal Literature" request for WI approval. Chris Ulffers offered further explanation regarding writing opportunities in this area of music including program notes and writing for various audiences. The motion was made to approve MUSC 5616 as WI. Description of action: Discussion of EXSS 4991 - "Independent Research in Exercise Physiology" request for WI approval. Rita Reaves had received further clarification from the professor regarding this proposal. Approval was recommended contingent upon minor editing to include the number of pages and length of chapters. Motion carried to approve EXSS 4991 as WI Description of action: Discussion of HIMA 4025/4052 (New revised course) - "Management of Health Information Services Department" request for WI approval. Committee members were asked to refer to the cover letter dated 11/6/98 from Dr. Elizabeth Layman which states: "HIMA 4052 is the result of a curriculum revision. It is the partial replacement of HIMA, Senior Project, 2 s.h. which was approved as writing-intensive in January, 1996." Motion was made to approve HIMA 4052 as WI contingent upon course approval by the University Curriculum Committee. Description of Item: Rita asked the Committee members to review tables 1, 2, 3, &4-"Student Opinion of Instruction Survey" - "Comparison of Writing-Intensive and Non-Writing Intensive Course Results - Table 1, Fall -1997; Table 2, Spring - 1998, Fall 1998 - Table 3 Table 4 - "Comparison of Average Responses in W-I and Non W-I Courses, 1997-1998 Members discussed results and subsequent implications of the information Dennis Cali suggested that the Committee devise its own student survey. Patch Clark suggested that the Committee survey graduates regarding the implementation of writing skills in the workplace.
