COMMITTEE: Writing Across the Curriculum Meeting Date: October 22,1998 Person Presiding: Chris Ulffers ACTIONS OF MEETING Description of action: Item: Motion made to pass minutes from the September 10th meeting. Motion carried. Description of action: Item: Rita asked members to take "Writing Requirement for Graduation from East Carolina University" flyers and post them in various locations Item: Motion was made to approve the minutes of September 24th, 1998. Motion carried. Rita announced that we did not have any new courses to consider and that she will write again to ask the professor for the previously tabled NUHM 4990 and 4991 to attend a WAC meeting. Rita made the announcement that ART 2910 - "Ancient Art" had passed as WI through e-mail voting procedures. Rita shared with the Committee members a memorandum dated October 1, 1998 from Sharon Morris Bland asking whether a "banked course" should retain its WI designation, and if the course is unbanked does it then require another review by the WAC Committee? The example cited was HlST 3760 After some deliberation, the motion was made stating that if a course is banked which has been designated as WI, the Wl status will be removed. Motion carried. Item: Rita shared responses and concerns of faculty members regarding the merits of journal writing, restrictive models, and the reduction of teaching load to allow adequate time to read, review, and assess writing assignments in WI designated courses. Committee members discussed all three concerns at length and did agree that administrative support was an absolute necessity in maintaining a quality WI program. Committee members suggested that a resolution be shared with the Vice- Chancellor stating the support of incentives for faculty who teach WI courses. The Committee adjourned with the next scheduled meeting date set for January 28th, 1999. No meeting dates have been set for November or December. Rita will correspond with us via e-mail and call a meeting if proposals are received which will need our attention.
