Committee: Writing Across the Curriculum MEETING DATE: December 5, 1996 PERSON PRESIDING: Lynn Eudey ACTIONS OF MEETING: Description of action: The minutes from the October 24, 1996 meeting were approved. Description of action: Review of request from Cynthia Johnson that CDFR 4001 Internship and CDFR 4410 Professional Seminar both be counted as WI. See attachment #2 memo dated 11/12/96. Dr Johnson was present to answer questions and provide examples of student writing. Motion carried and approved CDFR 4001 and CDFR 4410 be designated as writing intensive. Description of action: Review of request for all sections of OCCT 4047 Independent Study designated as writing intensive. Item: Motion to change or to and (see page 2? and motion carried and approved OCCT 4047 (all sections) be designate as writing intensive. Item: Rita informed the committee that Dorothy Mueller is suggesting that all departments develop a writing intensive Independent Study course. Description of action: Further discussion request for ANTH 2015, section 002, be designated as writing intensive. Motion carried and approved ANTH 2015, section 002, be designated as writing intensive. Description of action: Review of request for MGMT 4262 (Small Business Management - refer to attachment #3) be designated as writing intensive. Item: The committee proposed the following concerns and questions regarding this request * problem of equal distribution in a group setting * difficult to identify WI for individuals in this case * course seems to address collaborative writing rather than individual WI. * how is individual accountability assessed? Item: Rita will invite the professor to attend a meeting to answer questions and further explain procedures for writing intensive experiences in this class. Item: The committee suggested that collaborative writing needed to be considered in the future as a possible avenue for the writing intensive experience. Completion date/Follow-up) action required: Rita will invite Stephen Childress to attend a future meeting to discuss this request. Description of action: Refer to memo from Susan McDaniel dated 12/2/96 requesting "that credit earned by majors in biology in ENGL 3820 or ITEC 3290 be allowed to fulfill the requirement for 3 s.h. of writing intensive course credit in the major." Item: The committee expressed concerns regarding writing intensive experiences within the student's major department. Item: Request for writing intensive designation rejected. Description of action: Rita proposed a discussion regarding policy transfer for writing intensive credit to ECU and subsequent guidelines for evaluation. Item: Discussion included the following considerations: * not all courses which have the word writing in the title are writing intensive * how do we determine the nature of the course and the writing intensive requirements from just the title? * the Office of Admissions does have information regarding these transfer courses * students may provide some sort of documentation * development of criteria or a list of writing intensive courses which may transfer * investigate how other universities meet this need * submit to individual departments for review * ask for assistance from community colleges * request community college system to establish WI standards which may meet the requirements of UNC system Completion date/Follow-up action required: Rita will provide further information for continued discussion regarding this issue. Description of action: Request via Mike McCameron regarding 4806 and student substitution of requirement for Model #3 (Journal) in the case of study abroad. Item: Motion carried and request approved.
