COMMITTEE: WRITING ACROSS THE CURRICULUM MEETING DATE: FEBRUARY 27, 1997 ACTIONS OF MEETING: Description of action: Rita provided the Committee with the Director's Report and transfer of credit Description of action: The Committee was asked to consider transfer of WI credit. The following items were discussed regarding the above issue: - Rita stated that the appeals was process looked at one time but not possible - Consideration of courses that had "writing" in the title - Also did away with this option - policy to transfer - a course will transfer if it is so designated on the transcript Dean Dorothy Muller was present to provide further information regarding transfer of Wl credit. Dean Muller provided the Committee with the following information: (L.H. Zincone, Jr. was also present to discuss transfer of writing intensive credits.) - 1st semester freshman are now graduating under the wi policy, consequently, the following discoveries have been made: -. faculty advisers are not always clear regarding their advice. - idea of transfer credit for courses that include writing in the title and in the description in the title - asked committee to look at 3 considerations - look at appeals and writing in the title or the description - when a course transfers in 3880 (Technical Writing) but does not meet requirement (with a policy that's clear could be administered fairly) -what about poetry writing, etc.? - surcharge facing us - asking students to take extra course is diff1cult - goal - they learn to write as well as possible - Dean Muller is encouraging departments to put together syllabi that carry Wl designation- so that transfer students will have enough WI within their dept (say they get to Sr, yr. & don't have enough credits - must meet the needs of students - final - writing -across- the- discipline have had to look at a little more closely example - EDUC 3200 - not counted in the major - example of how it will be easier in courses in discipline -would not count - have come up in music and education -seems there are courses out there that professors haven't taken through the process - -social studies, political science- cannot count professional credits -could we reword to use profession credits for WI?. -Muller - not accepting Lit unless it has a WI in front of it -Muller. - example - Social Work - Internship - everyone takes it here/ is the same as student teaching - definition is a problem - this will be coming to us - Marilyn Sheerer -working on a proposal in Elementary Ed - difference in WI course - Special ed - Language Arts taught by Elem Ed LD MR, BH 12 hours - How would you interpret writing intensive? - What is the major considered - can it include professional credits? - Zincone - may be impossible to come up with language for all situations -Muller - To graduate, we want students to have some practice "in field" - Social Studies teacher - example/ what procedures better written in the teaching profession someone who can write about social studies or someone who can write lesson plans, etc - Recommendation from Dean Muller -. to go back and redefine what we mean by writing in the major - original goal for students to write better in their area - We need to have a way to deal with exemption - Rita departments are realizing that they need to put in a course in the junior or senior year - student has to have the opportunity to take a course, but how do we ask a student to take 3 s.h. extra on their program when we've only required 30 hours here? -Muller - reference to multiple models of WI - 10 paper each 5 pages long - learning as you're going - Rita asked that we consider the following: How do you use multiple drafts is on the WI proposal but we do not have criteria for grading / maybe we need to look at the definition or the wording - Rita offered to speak to Zincone's Department for 30-45 minutes for WI -Zincone - suggested difficulty in numbers for drafts - 550 majors and graduate 400 a year -Nancy - quoted from book regarding the issue that students receive feedback for their wrltmg -Zincone - collaborative writing - encouraged by chat he heard today -Zincone - Environment personified by recent articulation agreements between community college and ECU or general college. "Internalize" partners in Latin SAmerica - Ed module completely different period of 5 years to get degree - refer to memo 2/24/96 -question asking for 3880 we don't transfer in upper division - may bring in 38890 but students for the community college problem coming in from 4 year college -ENG 3880 is reading WI on transcript -When we backed away from appeals process we backed away from transfer -Muller asked that we - reconsider #2 Syllabus comes in goes into computer as WI - admissions would be happy to have the opportunity (identified as a composition or writing course and would meet WI requirement -look at guidelines for WI credit for transfer of students for this section of discussion - Dean Muller had to interpret them to students - develop policy to encourage all departments with these disciplines specific writing intensive Motion - move to vote to restore #3 -Departments publicize student experiences - get a list of courses good representative titles - are there any courses that a transferred in that are not designated for courses here? - Rita 3880 - coming in by # and title uescrsption of Action: Description of action: Motion: To revise wording and circulate for approval Motion passed Description of Action: Motion .To agree to the spirit of #3 with revision Motion passed - Rita will circulate revision and see if there are other revisions Description of Action: - minutes from last meeting with approved with correction of typographical error "Others In Attendance" change Childres to Childress -Rita will circulate SOCW 4990 -Meeting adjourned at 5:05
