Writing Across the Curriculum Committee Minutes for 28 September 2000 Present: Tope Bello; Patricia Clark; Robin Webb Corbett; Christine Hutchins; Marsha Ironside; Myra Brown; Laura McArthur; Liza Glasgow (SGA member); Chris Ulffers (ex- officio with vote); Jan Tovey (ex-officio without vote); Bob Morrison (Chair of the Faculty) Election of officers: * Patricia Clark unanimously elected Chair of committee * Robin Webb Corbett unanimously elected Vice Chair * Christine Hutchins unanimously elected Secretary First order of business: * Considered request to reclassify RCLS 4004, Philosophical and Current Issues in Leisure, as a Model 2 professional writing intensive course * Ulffers moved to table request for reclassification of RCLS 4004 * McArthur seconded move to table request for reclassification of RCLS 4004 * Committee unanimously voted to table request for reclassification of RCLS 4004 * Clark offered to contact RCLS department or professor in order to request clarification on RCLS 4004 writing assignment page lengths of papers listed on the syllabus * Committee planned to revisit the request for reclassification of RCLS 4004 next meeting, or by email if RCLS needs a decision earlier Second order of business: * Corbett moved to add to agenda the question of where to send students who are in upper level courses within major, yet are having difficulty fulfilling the writing requirements for the course and the major * Corbett noted that students who may have learning disabilities can be sent to the Counseling Center for testing * Tovey pointed out that the Writing Center is open to students from all courses in the university, located in General Classroom Building 2026 * Tovey said that Writing Center organizers are currently trying to find the resources to provide tutors who have experience writing in a wide range of disciplines and professions, sciences as well as humanities * Clark suggested that departments might help students succeed in upper level courses in their majors by reclassifying some 2000 and 3000 level courses writing intensive. Clark said that Theater is considering reclassifying Theater 2123 writing intensive since this gives students experience writing for their discipline and profession earlier in their university careers * Ulffers suggested providing writing models for students so that they can see successful examples of the writing assignment they are working on * Tovey suggested that instructors might provide Writing Center tutors with models of writing assignments so that they can better help students write discipline-specific assignments * Committee recommended that discipline- specific tutors be available in the Writing Center so as to better assist students who seek support there * Committee recommended that efforts be made to have every department in the university actively contribute to the Writing Center Third order of business: * Committee recommended that, in order to improve efficiency, committee members might receive requests for reclassification of courses in advance of the meeting. This will allow members to carefully consider course materials and request clarification and additional materials prior to meeting * Committee recommended that committee members have copies of the Writing Across the Curriculum Program descriptions of the requirements for the five models for writing intensive courses
