COMMITTEE: Writing Across the Curriculum MEETING DATE: September 26, 1996 PERSON PRESIDING: Chris Ulffers ACTIONS OF MEETING: Description of action: The nominations and election of officers of the committee were as follows: Chris Ulffers, Chair Lynn Eudey, Vice-chair Patch Clark, Secretary Description of action: Item - Previous business: Request for additional information --EXSS 4806 - Mike Cameron, Department of Exercise and Sport Science - Refer to memorandum dated June 6, 1996. Mike Cameron was present to answer questions and provide further information regarding EXSS 4806 and his subsequent request for WI designation. The Committee approved EXSS 4806 as Writing-Intensive. Description of action Items: Review of Goals and General Overview Chris provided a summary of the goals and an overview of ongoing work of the Committee. The following items were discussed: * evaluation of courses which are designated as writing intensive * review system of ongoing assessment * determination of faculty who are designated to teach WI courses each semester * resubmission of syllabi * academic freedom * awareness and incentive plan for faculty * training opportunities for faculty currently involved in the teaching of WI courses * training for new faculty Rita stated that some training had taken place but that more was needed. * introducing and exposing more faculty to the process of writing * release credit for those involved in the teaching of WI courses * Chairs' seminar regarding WI courses * Rita shared general information regarding ongoing discussion with an electronic group regarding WI courses. She will receive more information in February and will distribute the results to the Committee. Description of Action: Item - Policy for evaluation of WI courses for transfer students Refer to memorandums: September 19, 1996 Dr. Buddy Zincone, Transferring ENGL 3880 July 25, 1996 - Marion P. Sykes, Jr., Writing intensive courses at Beaufort Community College. Rita stated that the WI requirement is a graduation requirement and not a general education requirement. The Committee approved the concept for the development of a policy statement which will address the question pertaining to the evaluation and transfer of WI courses from other institutions. Completion date/Follow-up action req: Consideration of Engl 3880 was tabled pending further deliberation regarding a transfer policy statement. A policy statement will be submitted to the Committee at the October 24th meeting. The following policy statements were submitted by Rita Reaves and Collett Dilworth for consideration by Committee members at the October 24th meeting: For a course from another institution to transfer to East Carolina University as writing-intensive, it must be formally designated 'Writing - intensive" by the institution on the student's transcript. The Writing Across the Curriculum Committee will gladly share guidelines for designating courses as W-I with institutions interested in developing writing-intensive courses. Description of action: Item - "Review of Writing-Intensive Courses" - refer to memorandum - September 18, 1996 to Dr. Richard Ringeisen Rita shared the survey results and asked each member to read and review this packet of information.
