Committee: Writing Across the Curriculum Meeting Date: September 24, 1998 - 3:00 p.m. Person Presiding: Lynn Eudey ACTIONS OF MEETING: Description of action: Item: The Committee elected the following members as officers for the 1998-99 sessions: Chairperson: Lynn Eudey Vice-Chair: Chris Ulffers Secretary: Patricia (Patch) Clark Item: Approval of September 10th minutes. The motion carried and the minutes were approved. Description of action: Item: Discussion of NURS 3801 "Practicum in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing" and NURS 4701 "Senior Practicum in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing" and request for WI designation. Motion carried to designate both NURS 3801 and NURS 4701 as WI. Description of action: Item: Discussion of NUHM 4990 "Field Experience in Foodservice Management" and NUHM 4991 "Field Experience in Lodging Management" and request for WI designation. After in-depth discussion, the Committee agreed that there were a number of questions regarding this proposal including the following: *How is the Professional Paper requirement included in the syllabus? *Relationship of responses to grammar or content? The motion was made that this proposal be tabled until the professor could attend a meeting and address several questions posed by Committee members. Rita said that she would write an attachment. Motion carried. Description of action Discussion regarding ITEC 2020 Materials Technology with request to be designated as WI. Motion Passed to designate ITEC as WI. Rita Reaves will inquire to see if the term "Professional" may be a more appropriate description of the students' writing experiences in this class. Description of action Discussion regarding PSYC 5250 "Selected Topics in Psychology (Cognitive Development) with request to be designated as WI. Motion passed to designate PSYC 5250 as WI. Description of action Rita asked the Committee to address concerns regarding Model #3 and assessment criteria Rita will bring faculty concerns and topics which we will need to consider to the next meeting. Rita shared her "Review of Writing-Intensive Courses" which included faculty responses to four survey questions ( see memorandum dated 9/10/1998 to WAC Community): 93% of the faculty respondents reported that writing enhanced the extent top which students accomplish course objectives 88% reported that their writing instruction had positive effects on students ' writing skills 90% reported that they would teach this course again as WI. Committee members requested that at least one meeting be designated for the purpose of reviewing goals, models, faculty concerns, and survey data. Discussion and review of W-I proposals usually take the entire meeting time (usually 11/2 hours per session) and it was felt that a separate meeting would assist in time allotment for other considerations. Rita proposed that a deadline for submitting proposals would be helpful. Committee members proposed October 22 for the deadline for submitting proposals. Motion carried. The meeting adjourned at 5:00 p.m. The next meeting will be held October 22, 1998 at 3 p.m. Addendum: Rita circulated a revised proposal ( ART 2910 "Ancient Art") through the campus mail and asked that Committee members respond by October 8th, 1998.
