Subject: Announcement on Faculty Manual

To the ECU Community:

I am pleased to announce two committees that will oversee important work this year pursuant to mandates from the ECU Board of Trustees.  These mandates are to: 

• prepare a university-wide policy manual that will establish  formal university policies in many areas that have previously been neglected and
• revise the current ECU  Faculty Manual  so that it represents a “best practices” approach  to academic  policies.

Collaborative working relationships are vital to shared governance, so we will rely on these two committees to help ensure timely progress and strong results.  The Faculty Manual Steering Committee (membership attached) will be co-chaired by Dr. Marianna Walker, Chair of the Faculty, and Dr. Marilyn Sheerer, Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor.  Both have long and widely recognized commitments to shared governance.  The Steering Committee will establish the criteria for revisions to the manual, oversee their timely completion and make recommendations to the Chancellor on the results.  This committee will also be a vital review board as we develop the University Policy Manual.

The Faculty Advisory Group (membership attached) will report to the Steering Committee.  It will work with the Faculty Senate Committees, help them review and update sections of the Faculty Manual and help provide research or data as necessary.

The Steering Committee will begin work immediately and will be expected to report to the ECU Board of Trustees at the November, February and April meetings.   Questions, comments and suggestions should be directed to either co-chair of the Steering Committee.
